New rod ideas

In search of a new rod. Looking for a 8’ or so 5 weight 4 piece rod.

In the 6 weight and under that I have that I REALLY like are a 9’ 4pc 6wt Sage RPL and a 3pc 7 1/2’ 4wt Loomis GL3.

I would like to find a 5weight (not opposed to another 4 weight) as previously outlined with a similar feel to the above rods. I will just be using it for dries chasing rainbows, dollies, and the occasional streamer for odd salmon.

No place within a 3 hour plane flight of SE Alaska to test drive any.

Thanks!

P.S. No Stowaways from Cabelas.

Misty, where R U in S/E Alaska ? check and see if there are any fly fishing guiding operations in your area, most good fly fisherman would be willing to let you cast there rods when you explain what you are looking for. I lived and fished in Sitka for a little while, careful around them Salmon with a 5 wt, it could make you cry hehe

Misty Try talking to people on this site maby your neibor has a rod you can try out [url=http://www.alaskaflyfish.net/:c9ac2]http://www.alaskaflyfish.net/[/url:c9ac2]

As luck would have it there IS a fly shop. I didn’t know of it’s existence until yesterday. Though I think it might be a seasonal thing.

I tried a 5pc 5weight Stowaway last year and it was to tip heavy and slow for my liking.

I have a fair bit of experience with Loomis & Sage rods as a member of a casting club, and have a Loomis IMX as one of mine - I believe I understand the feel you are looking for. Sage now owns Redington. The Redington CPS has been compared very favorably to a Sage XP. I have a 7wt CPS and must say it is very light in the hand yet always ready to carry more line at any distance I cast. They are available at Cabela’s, so I suppose you could return it if you didn’t like it. (Can’t get the link to patch here.)

I also have a StCroix Legend Ultra 8.5ft 5wt and don?t think you could go wrong with one of those, but I think the CPS may be nicer.
