New One on me

I picked up the latest copy of “Field and Stream” yesterday. They had an article on fishing for alligator gar which included a picture of a 125-pounder!

db4d, that size is used for bait!

Jim, the lake you describe in your previous post sounds like the one they were fishing in the F&S article.

I was referring to Choke Canyon reservoir near Three Rivers, which is not too far from the Rio Grande Valley. We used to fish set-lines for blue cats there and were always amused by the gar fishers. Haven’t seen the article.

Some made it a tailgate party, with rods deployed in PVC tube holders on the front of their pickups.

I had a gar on last summer on Cayuga Lake in upstate NY. Ugliest thing with fins I’ve ever seen. Too many teeth, too. I was by myself on my powerboat trying to convince my outboard to keep running while trying to convince some smallies to bite. Instead, I got the prehistoric fish. I hope that was my last!
