Hi all, IM new to this site and have been on it for a while. Although it seems like there are alot of southern warm water fly fishers here i truly share your passion. Ive been living and fly fishing in Michigan (Lake St Clair) for nearly 30 years and although there are alot of trout streams here (mostly north) i have never, ever, caught a trout in MI. Warmwater, well that a different story. Ive attatched, hopefully, my biggest LM this year. It was caught on a lime green size 8 wooly bugger in 2’ of water on 4-15-10 in a very small canal of Lake St Clair. hopefully it attached.
I see alot of post for all types of warm water fish and hope I can contribute to this site.
Welcome GT171.
Very nice bass…how big?
Oh yeah, there’s all sorts here. Saltwater, warmwater, coldwater, …and guys that will fly-fish for just about anything!
Thanks for the welcome. The LM measered out at 19.5 and it was the second one this year already. First one was 18…Ive also got 2 carp to shore . This canal has also produced numerous bluegill and a large bowfin. Its still early up here and the white bass will start running in a couple of weeks. There is also a tremendous small mouth fisherie up here as well.
My weapon of choice is a 9’ 5wt green stix (locally made in MI) with a Orvis mid arbor reel.
If it worked i attached a pic of the bowfin and one of the carp. The carp is a great warm water fish that has tremendous speed and power. For the life of me I cant figure out why more ppl dont fish for them.
Those are some very nice fish. You are definitely one of us and very much welcomed to the best fly fishing site on the internet. Let us hear from you regularly. 8T
Welcome. If you like to chase things that swim in the water you have arrived at a place with a bunch of friendly, knowledgeable people. Looking forward to reading more of your posts.
welcome from another S.E. Michigan member.
I also fish bluegills, bass and carp. I do trout fish up north also. Have you thought of going a little heavier and trying for pike and musky? although I am currently a west sider I grew up in New Baltimore and like to fish LSC.

Welcome GT171 from Tennessee!! I am originally from the Mt Clemens / Harrison Twp area and know Lake St. Clair very well, fished it most of my life. You sure are fishing some of the finest small mouth bass water in the country as you properly know. You need to head north and fish the Trout Rivers, I just spent last weekend traveling across the U.P. and I wish I had time to fish all the rivers and streams I crossed.
Welcome GT171,
It looks like you live in warmwater heaven. I live in Eastern Washington and not too far from a lake that holds lots of bass and black crappie. I’m planning on targeting a bunch of them this year and was wondering what kind of set up works best for crappie. I’ll be playing with an 8 1/2’ , 6 weight and a 5 weight switch rod.
GT171, welcome to FAOL from west central Missouri. I target bluegill and bass and have a real blast. I only fly fish, don’t need to carry a large tacklebox that way. I recently retired from 33 years of LE and now plan to fish alot more. Take care and welcome again, John.
Welcome from Minnesota, our car license plates lie, we don’t have 10,000 lake. Actually we have 15,453 lakes, and the most common lake name is “Mud”! For the most part, our waters are clear, and the fishing is good. Our women are all good looking, our men are handsome, and our children are above average! We also haver over 9000 miles of rivers, streams, and creeks to go fishing for all sorts of freshwater fish species including trout. From Rochester MN, to the Mississippi River, runs Interstate 90, and on both sides of that highway it is nothing but coul?e limestone trout streams in deep shaded valleys…why would anyone pass up the opportunity while driving to Montana, I don’t know! ~Parnelli
Gt, welcome from the beautiful Missouri Ozarks! That was a nice bass too!!! I too am one of those guys who fish for anything, warm or cold water. One of my favorite encounters is with someone bait fishing on a warm water creek and when they see me with my fly rod they’re always quick to remind “there ain’t no trout in here…what are you fishing for?”. Easy response…fish!
