New line?

I got some scientific anglers Ultra 4 WF-2-F. I have no idea what end to attach to the backing. The other line I had Which was extremely cheap, has a little sticker on it that said “This end to backing”.

Edit: I just looked in the box, apparently there “was” a sticker on it, bit it wasn’t on the line, fell off or something. So it was at the bottom of the box. Any ideas?

Anyone able to guide me here in the right direction? Thanks a lot:)
Shane

Did you take it off the spool so far?

If not, open the spool up, put your hand through the big loop. If one end is on the outside, and one on the very inside, the outside one is your end (hopefully).

Otherwise, it’s gonna get a little tougher. You’re going to either guess it by fully taking the line off the spool, and you can either guess, by looking at the first thirty feet and seeing which is bigger, or you can weigh the front 30 feet using a good digital scale that will tell you grams (the heavier side is your front taper). The back of the WF will not have any size change, while the front will (since its not a DT).

If all else fails, try one side, cast with it with 30-40 feet out. Try casting the other end with 30-40 feet out. Which ever loads (and feels right) is correct. Don’t even need to put it on a reel to try this…should probably just try this, if you have somewhere to cast

The end that goes onto the reel, connected to the backing actually, will continue to be exactly the same diameter for many feet from the end. This is likely the end you can get to easily. The other end, (probably down next to the spool) where you tie the leader, is level for a short distance, then tapers bigger quite fast, remains big for a long way, then shinny’s back down to the rear ‘running’ line size.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, it wasn’t wrapped around the spool itself, it had a couple pipe cleaner thingies around it, when I pulled them off to check, it got tangled. I think, I have the right end (The one that came off first) and I put the sticker back on it. I tried to check, but the line tangles so quickly it’s hard to check. Would it be possible to find out with a micrometer? Says here on the back of the box.

TIP - 0.5’ Front Taper - 4.3’ Belly - 23.7’ Rear taper - 4.0’ Running line 58.0’.

And does the the weight forward gonna make that much of a difference? 6 inch tip, and .3 of a foot more on the taper. That doesn’t sound like much. But I guess it probably makes the difference huh??

I’d only have to check the first .5 feet no? Or would the rear taper have a 0.5’ tip as well?

What he said although it may be a little tougher to distinguish with a two weight but that running line; (“the end that goes onto the reel, will continue to be exactly the same diameter for many feet from the end”), will be REAL skinny on a 2wt line.

A micrometer will be tough to use accurately on a soft fly line. It’s eyeball time!

That’s why I like DT’s; I can put them on drunk with one eye closed.

OttoDita …that 23.7’ belly is the business part of the weight forward and will be the thickest…you should be able to eyeball it or feel it.

Learn to feel it …it will help you when you are casting any fly line.

Just a thought, but why not take it back to the store that you bought it from and ask for an exchange?

Ok, I think I got it worked out. I wound both ends onto something and starting eyeballing it. When I found a thicker part I checked it, and sure enough, it was thicker. So I used a cheapo micrometer, and while the one end was tight, the other end would pull through. So I then checked what end that thick part was closer to, and tied the opposite end to the backing.

From now on, I’m checking the line before I leave the shop haha.

Thanks a lot guys,
Shane

I was going to exchange it, but it’s a long drive. I figured worse case scenario, I’d go back. I wanted to try and work it out myself.
