New High Tech Coating

Just let your imagination run wild with all the things you can do with this stuff. If you buy the two part material and mix your own it’s a little over $155 per quart, but super glue is still close to $95 per quart in small tubes.

Imagine opening all of your dry fly boxes on a work bench. Pass the air brush once over all the boxes. BOOM!! No floatant needed…and your boxes repel water at the same time!

I wonder how long the coating lasts?

I think the info on the material mentions abrasive may affect the effectiveness of the coating. What do you think a coating on mated smooth surfaces would do.

According to the website, the color is a translucent white and they do not have a transparent coating at this time.

Here is the link to the website…great looking stuff. http://www.spillcontainment.com/everdry

Rumor has it that Rancid Crabtree was an early test subject after an unwarranted bath washed off his protective crust…

I told my pastor at the Baptist church I attend about this product. He was quite concerned about misuse by the Methodist.

Google “hydrophobic nanotechnology” and you will get a lot of hits. There are companies working on using this for waders and outdoor clothing.

I wonder if ski wear can be a problem. They tried super slick skiwear about 30 years ago and if skiers fell, there was not enough friction of stop the skiers. That trend didn’t last too long!

Something that didn’t occur to me until just a minute ago is using it to coat fly lines. Casting might be better but more to the point, lifting the line off the water might create less disturbance. I wonder if it damages fly lines &/or leader material. That might be great stuff for furled thread leaders.

If one sprayed too far down a line or leader, it might make knots highly questionable.

Perhaps it will become the next practical joke, coating friends tippet material, brooms, etc… Perhaps if Sisyphus ever gets his boulder to the top of the hill, his next task will be to tie a couple of dozen bead head nymphs using beads liberally coated with the stuff.

A young fellow on a local BB, was thinking about the extended period between doing laundry and changing bed linen for single guys. But if you jumped in the bed after a shower you might slide out the other side.

I have to admit I did think of telling some of my hotel friends about the product as a possible coating for bedspread / comforter in hotels, which do not get laundered that often.

“Brooms”???

I will leave that comment for EdD.

I think the solvents in this product would turn flylines into plastic goo. But there may be other products out there, I have a friend who was involved with a form release using no volatile organic compounds that used nanotechnology. I was thinking this could be a boon to sinking line casting and getting it out of / off of the water.

Imagine trying to sit on a broom handle coated with that stuff…
If it doesn’t make it slick, then it might keep it dry.
A witch could coat her big, pointy hat with that stuff to repel the rain. Lightning would require a different sort of protection.
Speaking of protection, I think it’s time for toads to hide under big rocks…

I read about this on another bb I frequent (Modern Vespa). The potential is huge. Unfortunately it’s very expensive. I think I read its over $500 for a gallon of the two part mixture. I’m sure in time the price will dramatically drop as uses increases. I would love to have my car clear coated with the stuff when they finally are able to develop a translucent version.

Yes, EdD, that would be a good idea!

You would buy a white car. I think the price works out at about $628 per gallon. There are other products out there with similar results. I was talking with a friend who was/is invested in a company producing a no VOC form release for concrete using nano-tech stuff. They were not allowed to patent their formulation for some technical reason, which I understood to be the Patent Office didn’t understand how it works.

I wonder if it could be used to cut down on the graffiti on buildings etc. It would be great to watch some spray can artist in total frustration  because the paint doesn’t stick.

That’s excellent!

It would be more fun to catch them while holding Rin Tin Tin’s nasty tempered great grandson on a leash. The coating would probably be more effective but not as much fun.
