For me, this was an exciting new find at the Fly Fishing Retailers show last weekend. Glossy and slick, colorful, lots of beautiful photos, and some really interesting flies. Then I looked inside the cover to see who the editors were, and who did I find but Al and Gretchen Beatty’s smiling faces looking out at me! I sure hope they can make Lowell again this year, one of their tying demonstrations is worth the whole trip out there. The first issue of the magazine has a great mix of classic, artistic and modern flies in it. I’m impressed! Go for it, Al and Gretchen, and good luck.

i also think the associate editors should be recognizied as well as the authors who helped pull it all together.
I have tried unsuccessfully to use Paypal to pre-purchase that magazine for 6 months now. Tried it again a couple of weeks ago as I get regular emails from Hatches. For whatever reason, their link with PP is not working for me.
did you let them know that it wasnt working so that they may get it fixed???

Yes I have.
PayPal worked for me. Thanks for the tip on what looks like a great magazine!

I payed by Pay Pal but have not recieved the magazine yet.
Finally got Paypal to work. Says it should arrive in 2-5 days. I am looking foward to it.
“Glossy and slick”
Glossy and slick has turned me off about every periodical out there… esp ff mags…the only subscription I have these days is Gray’s…and even that is marginal most of the time. the typed and copied guild newsletter tops them all.
I’d second what ‘Darkstar’ wrote, except for Grey’s because I’ve never read it. However, I’ll probably try and get a copy of ‘Hatches’ just to see about that magazine for myself.

Border’s Books has my area’s largest selection of fly fishing mags…I’ll have to see if they have it. Looks interesting.
Thanks,
Mike
I tried paypal and was directed to a page where it asked for my credit card # which I will not send.
Oops my bad , finally found out what I was doing wrong and should get my mag by the time I get back from Lowell.
By ‘glossy and slick,’ I’m talking about the paper on which the magazine is printed. It costs more–but it means that color photos reproduce beautifully. As a photographer, that’s a plus for me, not a minus.

I got my copy yesterday. The articles on married wings and Carrie Stevens Flies was worth the price of the magazine alone! Plus articles on Pike Flies and tying quill wings are just gravy. Detailed, in-depth articles with lots of pictures. And very little advertising with the articles all together (that one’s for you DShock). Great magazine and well worth the price. The only problem is I have to wait a year for the next issue!

I can’t wait to see mine when it comes. I also had trouble wit PP and ended up calling them and left a message and soon they returned my call and took my order.
Now if it would just get here?

Sounds COOL!!
Mine arrived and will be my lunchtime read today. Less than 2 hours to lunchtime.
I finally received my copy–paid with PayPal back in August with no problems.
The first issue is very well done with flies and techniques that should interest many tiers whether they fish for bass, pike, trout, or want to see some beatifully tied salmon flies. There are also some interesting tidbits on dubbing techniques that should appeal to beginning tiers. All in all, I feel it is a better mag than Fly tyer–too bad it will only come out annually. Quarterly like FT would be better IMHO.
I do like it better than the other go to here, see me, buy this stuff magazines that seem to pervade the market recently
