New fly for me and fishing results...

I never try to match anything in particular when I tie and when I fly fish. I just like to create different flies and go test them. On this one I decided that I wanted to try and tie one fly that had properties of other “go to” flies that produced good results. The Crackleback has been a good fly for me and the color orange has been a good color for me, so, I decided to create a larger fly with these 2 properties and this is what I came up with:

Then I decided to take it fishing and see what the fish thought of it and was surprised! I fished today from 2pm to 5:30pm and ended up with 33 trout with one being a nice brown! Yes, I have a counter and I count my fish. Just my way… I also had about 8 LDR’s… Here are a few pictures of today’s great fun:

Hi WarrenP,

That’s just my kind of fly! I quite like wingless palmers. I like the idea of the pull over back from the Crackle back. A nice touch on some of these types of flies is to add a turn or two of Guinnea Fowl as a collar hackle right at the front. Still, it sounds like you’ve already cracked the code with this one. Nicely done.

Thanks Jeff, I appreciate your comments. This is a very easy tie and you can tie up a bunch in no time at all. Here is what I put together:

Hook - Lucky Strike NH 9 (Nymph/Hopper) in size #10 3X Long
Tail - Herl from a Pheasant Tail feather
Body - Orange Punch Yarn
Pull-Over - Two strands of Black Punch Yarn twisted together to give more bulk and show up better
Hackle - Wapsi Streamer Rooster Neck in Sculpin Olive/Var

I tied up some others tonight with the body made from Fluorescent Green Punch Yarn and plan on doing some with a Yellow body.

The fish would not hit it on a “dead drift”. I fished it across and down with a constant twitching of the rod tip to give it some movement and then at the end of the swing, I would just bump it with the rod tip and pull in a little line. They would just “hammer” it! Really was a lot of fun! I guess I fished it a lot like I fish my soft hackles.

Thanks again for your comments…

… you got another winner there, for sure.

John
