His name is Kuma. He weighs in at about 140. Loves water.
You can’t get any better fishing partner than a Newfoundlander. He’ll pull you out if you fall in and everything
Kerry,
He weighs one forty NOW.
That is one fierce looking dog and handsome too!
Thanks,
Doug
Doug, I don’t think I have ever heard anybody describe a newfie as fierce before. They have got to be one of the mellowest dogs on earth.
Brad, this is my third Newfoundland. We adopted this guy from someone that could not take care of him anymore. Wonderful animals but they don’t make real good fishing partners. They like the water to much. I have never found a way to keep them from spooking the fish. Something about a 140 lb. dog swimming by that tends to put fish down.
First trip to the river and he was in it in seconds. The only dogs I have seen that will intentionally dive completely underwater. Perhaps I can train him to herd fish.
Kerry,
Great looking dog. Almost blew coffee outta my nose when I read fierce looking. A newfie might lick you to death or sit on your lap and squish you, but fierce? Congrats on providing a home to a great dog in need.

Good looking fishing buddy. Have you tried to tie any flies with that hair? Just a thought.
Teach him to herd fish. He ought to stir up any lockjawed trout
Kerry,
I was just kidding about the ‘Fierce’ comment.
I used to have a St. Bernard. Lifting those 50 pound bags of food was memorable.
Does it take a long time for your dog to dry off after taking a dip?
Doug
Kerry,
Beautiful dog. I LMAO when I saw 1) fishing partner…as in, “goodbye any fish close enough to cast to”, & 2) fierce looking! They are lovers to be sure. My daughter has a mastiff & there isn’t a mean bone in Angus’ body. I love big dogs. Thanks for sharing.
Mike
Haha…indeed. How old is Kuma? Is he still growing?
Envious here…but VERY glad for you. Dinah also, did not promote stealth, and that is but a small price to pay for the companionship of a four-legged friend.

In the 1970s my neighbour Bill had a large Newfie. Macgee was big even for a newfie. Like all newfies macgee was very loving and gentle. He could almost drown you with his big ole tounge . Bill would walk macgee in downtown Princeton.A almost everybody who met Bill and that great big dog for the first time would ask the same dumb question . “What do you feed Him?” Bill tired of this happening all the time. He would assume a bored look on his face and answer in a monotone. "Slow Kids, I feed him slow kids, there ain’t no slow kids in our neighbourhood.
People would either laugh out loud at that or leave in a hurry. Bill always said that the ones that laughed were his kind of people and the ones that left He probably wouldn’t have liked anyway.
I have met dozens of them and have yet to meet a Newfie that wasnt just the best the best guy around.
If I got a dog it would have to have a chiwawa size and a Newfie personality.
