I always considered myself as a pretty open minded person. I see previews for new shows (when the snow is flying too hard to fish
and some I have to raise an eyebrow while others I think, I gotta see that one.
But seriouslyâŚon either HBO or SHOWTIME there is a new series called âCALIFORNICATIONâ.
Even I am having a hard time with that one.
Am I becoming a prude?
I guess Showtime or HBO doesnât think the show can make it on its own merit so they resort to cheap tactics to gain a first time showing audience.
For a trial period I had free HBO and Showtime and it didnât impress me at all and I cancelled it early.
That is one BIG problem with Cable TV, You actually have to pay more for mediocre programming, as you graduate to more channels packages.
Itâs simple! Would I rent that garbage at Blockbuster? NO! So why should I pay Comcast for HBO and Showtime? ![]()
Someday I hope we can pay only for the channels we choose.
Doug
Right On!

There is nothing prudish about good morals. I have got to know you and your hubby a bit through these boards. From what I can tell both of you are good souls. You have my respect. Far as I am concerned shows like that only point out the decay that our society has suffered. Being open minded is a good thing so long as it is tempered with good morals. Your very post shows that you have good morals and you follow them. Keep fighting the good fight. I am there with you. ![]()
The guy from that show was on Leno last night. YuckâŚ
David whats his name from Xfiles?
Duchovny.
ya
Haveât seen the previewâs for that yet, but the best show ever on tv was on HBO and was cancelled. So I cancelled HBO.
Viva la Deadwood the Bella Union and The Gem Saloon!
There used to be a saying around hereâŚâDonât californicate OregonââŚwas that a bad :?
Band Of Brothers, HBO Series was very good!
It isnât just TV Shows that arenât very good, Movie Studios have handicapped Blockbuster Rental because the movies are so bad that there not even rentable.
That might have something to do with why some people still watch The Andy Griffith Show, Lucy Show, Little House On The Prairie, Lawrence Welk, Carol Burnett and College Sports. We want wholesome entertainment, but the entertainment industry is their own worst enemy!
Doug
Anymore, WHEN I infrequently watch TV, I watch Outdoor channel, Discover channel, Weather channel (love their shows on storms), classic movie channels, & some sports. Other than that, Iâm pretty much turned off by the garbage known as entertainment.
Mike
It sounds like my TV lineupâŚminus the college sports!
MUCH to my wifeâs chagrin; I watch the Lawrence Welk show because I am a musician and I appreciate good musicianship and his orchestra had some of the best. The one thing that always fascinates me about that show and era is when they show the audience; everyone is dressed nicely and they applaud loudly and respectfully and DONâT scream and look like slobs like most audiences seem to these days.
Thank goodness for reruns!
This probably isnât important to most people, but Blockbuster, the History Channel, Discovery Channel, sell individual programs and entire seasons of programs, without commercials!!
Doug
Back in the âgood ole daysâ we only had a couple of channels to choose programming from. Most folks pretty much watched whatever the networks told them to watch, or turned off the TV and did something elseâŚwhich is not a bad choice.
Today, the average CATV or satellite subscriber has about 100 channels of programming to pick and choose from. There is some very good programming out thereâŚand a lot more of it. Choices, choices, choicesâŚchoice = freedom = happiness. There are all sorts of folks on this big blue marble with all sorts of different sensibilities and tastes. âGoodâ is a very subjective adjective. Todayâs TV shows are a quantum leap ahead of the golden age of TV in terms of production quality, variety, and so forth. Acting and writing are purely human endeavors pretty much un-impacted by technology. I think writing is where the TV and movie industry have gone soft. But there is still some very high quality work being done. Itâs just that with all the opportunity generated by more demand for programming, the bar has been lowered in terms of what makes it on TV or the silver screen or DVD. Look at YouTube! 99% total garbage, but some real gems mixed into the rubbish heap.
We have on demand CATV programming. That means I choose what I want to watch from the movie channels a la carte and pay for it that wayâŚone program at a time. What is available now is pretty much what is available at the video store. But I donât have to leave my recliner. I pay basically the same fee, but I do it all with my remote control. No videos to return by a deadline, no lines to stand in, no rainy parking lot to run across. They even have a free on demand section. A lot of that is trailers and other useless junk, but sometimes there is some pretty good stuff in there someone is just wanting to get exposed to an audience. I also get satellite radio and hi-speed internet delivered via CATV.
âCalifornicationâ is a phrase that has been bouncing around pop culture in America now for almost 2 decades. It refers to the exodus from California into the western states and the resulting side-effects and consequences of that upon the communities and regions they migrate to. Californians are notorious for fleeing California to âget out of the nightmareâ only to move somewhere else and try to make it more like California. Itâs a PG way of saying Californians move somewhere else because theyâve totally ruined California, but when they get there they screw the new place up too.
The King James Version of the Holy Bible uses the word fornication more than any other published work of literature. Of course, the Bible is probably the quintessential textbook on the decay of civilization and culture. So I get your point.
As far back as âThreeâs Companyâ, I quit watching âSit-Comsâ.
Most of them are just supposedly average joeâs getting into âsituationsâ. Situations that most average average joeâ (and joans) with a modicum of sense 1. wouldnât have gotten into, or 2. would have gotten into without all of the angst portrayed in the shows.
Are we supposed to learn from theses shows? Are we jost supposed to mindlessly laugh at their futile attempts to unravel their âsituationâ?
Iâm sorry, (not really, but it implies remorse) but I donât find that sort of comedy amusing.
I also take issue with most of the stand-up comics these days. Stereotyping, racial or otherwise, is only funny for a very limited time. And it seems like they are all hitting the same notes.
OK, rant over.
(PS, Iâm sitting here watching Bob Hope strut his stuff on HBO Comedy right now, so there is SOMETHING on the premiums)

Who Doesnât âLove RAYMONDâ
Raymondâs Mother (Doris Roberts) is my worst nightmare!
Raymondâs mother IS my mother! Everyone who knows my family well jokes about it.
Donât watch TV. I monitored that technology for yearsâŚas someone else once said. I donât watch TV, read ANY newspapers or listen to radio. I only listen to beautiful music on CDâs. I have come to the conclusion the tv people talking about current events 50 years ago look just like the tv people talking about current events today. Has no bearing on me deciding to go fish this evening for some smallmouth. The bobbing heads on news shows, the vulgar tv seriesâ, the radio talk showsk, even NPR are no longer a part of my fly fishing life. I waste ZERO time on them.
What I WILL watch tomorrow night is the meteor shower after 9pm. Supposed to be 100 visible per hour. Now that I will watchâŚthat will be an EXPERIENCE. Personally, I feel that all that other stuff is a plastic life and has no bearing on the real experiences of lifeâŚfishing, getting rained on, running, jogging, motorcycles, music, whatever your pleasure is. The TV/raido programsâŚMOST of them have no positive input on it. I can live without the few that do.
I knowâŚwho cares what I watch. Just wanted to state that TV is not a necessity.
