birddog,
I got an E-Z tyers desk for Cary last year, and other than having to build it, it’s really great! It’s a good size, has storage, and, if needed, be folded down and moved. I think you’ll really like it!
Betty
That will certainly work. Not much
storage there however so you’ll need to
find something else for storage. Let me
make a suggestion if I may. I’m a
mouthy dude at times.G My wife and I
enjoy going “junking” one day a week. It’s
just a chance to get out together, prowl a
few shops and grab a nice lunch some place.
We have over a dozen Goodwill stores,
Habitat for Humanity recycling centers,
Salvation Army stores, and a number of
thrift shops within an hours drive. We
routinely see nice rolltop desks, armoires,
computer centers, and you name it each time
we go. All of them for less than the price
of your desk, and many of them quality
furniture that will work for your bench,
provide storage, and be at home in any room
with the wifes blessing. Some are new, some
lightly used, and some hammered.G But you
are sure to find something to fit the bill.
Just food for thought. Warm regards, Jim
Scared me for a second there…Seen the cabela’s coming up and then seen it was their real desk…If anyone is thinking of their desk that the front flips up and hides all the stuff after tying…I’d NOT recommend that desk!..
I bought one while still living in Syracuse…and it just is not a very useful tying desk…It is very hard to access the drawer in the middle of tying operations!!
I gotta go with Jim’s recommendations…if you’re not blessed with so many thrift stores take a look at the Office Max’s and Office Depots…I still think [if you’re thinking new] there are some really handy computer desks out there and they can be very versatile…all shapes and forms… and some decent prices…

Looks like a nice setup. My only comment is STORAGE IS EVERYTHING. While it looks like a nice worksurface with some handy storage areas for threads, flosses, etc., where are you gonna keep all your real stuff?
I bought one of those from Cabela’s not long ago. I was under-whelmed (to say the least) with the “quality” of it. Chunks missing from the cheesy thin “laminate”. The holes were mostly not cut out properly in the laminate so you have to trim most of them by hand in order to put it together (big time hit).
One piece was drlled wrong at the factory but it’s one of the pieces you assemble about 2/3rds of the way through and by then, I wasn’t giving up. I fixed it myself and kept going.
For the price, it works fine. You have to remove that bar across the back that runs from the left to the right legs in order to fold it up so it’s not really a fold-up desk in the useful sense.
I’ve put together a wide variety of budget furniture over the years and this one falls below them all in quality.
It looked like it was a great idea but somewhere in the process of cost reducing it for manufacturing, problems crept in…
A decent desk for the cost, but it still seemed to be below par on quality.
My desk came in the mail yesterday and I?ll have to agree it is not one of best-made pieces of furniture I?ve seen. But all the holes where in the right spots and it does have a large work surface. After it is together it looks pretty nice and think it is a value at the price I paid. After 10 years of not having a permanent tying area set up I really looking forward to not having to take out my stuff and put it all away every time I want to tie a fly.

I agree it’s great to have a dedicated spot
for tying. I know I have tied a lot more
since I created a place. Often before it
was just too much trouble to set it up and
dig everything out of the hidey holes. Hope
you get a lot of enjoyment from your desk.
You might consider the junk store route for
obtaining material storage to accompany
your desk. Or, many of the department
stores now have affordable plastic cabinets
that might fill the bill. I keep hoping to
find a deal on one of the many drawered type
apothecary cabinets but no joy of yet.G
Warm regards, Jim
I have plenty of storage for now. Plastic pullout bins in my closet. I am hoping to only keep what I need for what I am tying on the desk and keep the lion’s share in their bins. I will have to decide what stays out on the desk.
