New Denny Rickards

Here is the new Denny Rickards Fly. It is on a streamer hook this one looks like about a #4. And of course the 20 wraps of .20 lead by eye.
I am seeing a RUSTY marabou for the tail, Then BROWN marabou wrapped around hook, then a wing sort of. Then this process is repeated a second time. Looks like 4 or 6 strands of Pearl Flashabou is tied in here at the sides.
Then is is a chenille, looks like Root beer, but I guess any matching color sparkle Chenille. Soft Hackle collar, this could be Partridge. He said long is good and BUSHY.
I am thinking a Black/Burnt Orange in addition to this brown. Plus Olive, and Black. In the Fall I am thinking YELLOW and BROWN or RED mix.

Right on Denny, this is going to be killer!

FG, Have you got the fly in hand or a picture?

Interesting…a little more involved than most Denny ties.

I’m guessing burnt orange for the tail…you know how he likes that.
I’ve noticed he’s using some Ice Dub lately…maybe that’s the stuff under the soft hackle.

Do you know what he calls it?

PS: I just looked up the article on him in Fly Tyer…and it would appear this may be his new “Stillwater Bugger” the picture shows it in burgundy and says the thorax is Holo-Bright or Ice Dubbing…hackle :saddle hackle

Wow, that sure looks different then his usual “sparse” buggers!

Duckster, yes I have the fly. He actually handed it to me and told me to dissect it. If I remember right, the ones in the Fly Tyer are his old pattern. The same idea with the Marabou Wings up the back in two spots, but the with the chenille and the soft hackle are KEWL.
He was not happy about that article. How is he suppose to sell his books when they print all the patterns in a magazine. But, this is new and HE has changed his tune from less is more, to more is better.

Interesting…thanks…

FG,
I believe the material under the soft hackle is Jay Fairs short shuck material also looks like
jays olive and cinnamon marabou, should work like a charm
G

You are more than likely right. Fairs is Rickards choice of material. Thanks for the feed back, I forgot all about that.

I watched him tie at a show this winter. Tied up something very similar to this, but I think it had a marabou tail and 2 marabou ‘wings’ and ice dub behind a burnt-orange saddle hackle. I believe he called it, simply, the ‘Lake Fly’. I took some notes and have tied up a few black ones recently.

That sounds like this one, Thanks.

With all that weight and the oranges and brown, that would be a pretty good crayfish immitation fished on the bottom. Have to ensure the weight were on the top of the hook so it rides poit up, but that’s not hard.

Thanks for sharing the fly and opening the discussion!

Now, if only I could tie as well as that 11-yr-old. . . . . . .

I heard Denny talk last week…he mentioned this fly [I think]…and now lists it in his new catalog…in his talk he said it had been “a work in progress”…it is called …“Denny’s Stillwater Bug” …in his 2008 catalog…it has some differences with the fly you show FG but similar…he said his biggest on it so far is only a 13# rainbow and wonders if we can do better:roll:

His fly, so I guess he can do what he wants…sure is a great fly though.

Could be worse for Denny,People could just post his new patterns on the web and do away with print all together…Just say’in

if you’re good enough to decipher fly patterns just by looking at a foto, he gives you the color combos here. or buy 1 for a sample
