I’ve been wanting to build a furling board that is easier to transport. I had a unused tool box that I felt I could fit the board into with all the tools and materials.
I wanted a board that would allow me to make 30", 4’, 5’ and 6’ 6" leaders (which my current board will do) but have it fit into a 20" tool box!
Now came the hard part!! What length should each section be?? After all I had to take care not to have the section connectors overlap one of the pegs!!
I also wanted to keep it as simple as possible (Remember KISS?). I took the better part of an afternoon to determine that sections of 20"/20"/16"/16"/16" would fill the bill.
Now this board is/has to be special (as in work of art!). I started with an 8’ “Select” 1"x4"x8" pine board.
After cutting the sections to length each was given 3 coats of clear polyurethane (sanded between each coat) also before the second coat all the peg positions were labeled. The sections are connected by highly polished Aluminum “C” channel.
In a nut shell the thing is so darn pretty I’m afraid to use it!!!:mrgreen:

After making about 2 dozen leaders I had to modify the board!!:sad: Problem 1- I used 2" aluminum channel to connect the sections (5) and they did not make the board as ridged as I’d hopped!
Problem 2- The natural finish made it almost impossible to see what I was doing with clear mono or fluoro.:mad: Problem 3- The high polish on the aluminum looked nice but gave off a of glare:sad:
I’m working on solutions so bear with me.
Try rubbing it with some 00 steel wool to reduce the shine on the finish and the aluminum. If that doesn’t work there is always flat black Krylon.

Nice job Jack. You could be a secret furling agent with that get up. My new board is not quite as portable, but I bet it is prettier!

Great job on the board jack
The board will make 4 different length leaders. All the pegs are removable for easier packing. The Black section is to help see the clear mono’s and Fluorocarbons.
Here it is set up to make a 4’ leader.
I’ve found that setting up on an ironing board is a lot easier on my back.
