Needloft canvas yarn

Ok, here it is. Here’s the Canvas Yarn story. This is it in its natural state

I’ve used it for tail material and body but you can also shred it and use it as dubbing or post for a dry fly, it’s very durable too.

These are the flies I’ve tied with it. First, the freshwater flies and then de salwater flies.

10 yards will cost you $ .45 cents so if you buy all their 45 colors you’ll spend around $ 20.25 plus shipping, here is the link:

Cool flies, I think I’ll be ordering some soon. For the merkin type patterns did you use this stuff for the body (parted tied in across hook shank) or did you use rug yarn or something else for that?

Bouncing around their site, if you sign up for their free newsletter you can get 20% off, and if you place an order of $25 or more you get free shipping in November.

For those who don’t like to ‘order’ things my WalMart carried this stuff, although not all the colors. Almost any hobby or craft/sewing type store will have this or an equivalant…just look in the section where they sell that funky ‘plastic canvas’ stuff (looks like a white plastic ‘grid’).

It’s a great tying material. I use it on any fly that calls for yarn. It’s nice that you can buy it in smaller portions.

Buddy

p.s; If you look on their site under ‘cord’ you can find the ‘solid gold’ and ‘solid silver’ which is basically the same mylar cord they sell in the fly shops…small size.

What Buddy said…I’ve gotten most of mine from Wal mart over the years but they seem to be stocking less and less of it…same is true of Micheal’s etc…the craft stores charge more…

Excellent stuff to use as an ingredient when making your own dubbing.

Sadly SoCal Walmarts don’t carry it. I also bought most of mine when I lived in AZ. It’s all the same material in different colors.

Remember Aunt Lydias Rug yarn? It was repackaged as sparkle yarn by fly shops. Unfortunately it can’t be bought anymore and plastic canvas yarn can be used as a substitute. It some applications, it is better than Aunt Lydias.

I’ve used Needloft plastic canvas yarn for years in patterns that call for antron or zelon. I use it on sparkle duns, x-caddis, serendipities, for parachute posts, etc. When it is wet, the color darkens so test the yarn wet before you tie a lot of flies.

The best place to buy it is Crafter’s Market. They carry every color that Needloft that makes, sell at a discount, and have flat rate shipping. It is my go to source.

Martin, what is the color that you used for the caddis pupae? That looks like an almost perfect match for the ones around here…

Note that the two mail order references above are for two different products…one is yarn and the other cord…Just a heads up…you need to search the sites…

The link martin posted is for the cord, but the yarn is on the same site.

I’m sorry, I corrected the link.

By the way, I was actually looking for rug yarn when I came accross the canvas yarn.

Flyfshn76, I used yellow canvas yarn for that pattern. Divide the piece or yarn in two and put a small amount of hare in between, twist and wrap on the hook, it gives it that “buggy” look. The thorax is peacock. Hope this helps.

Both companies mentioned above carry the yarn and the cord. So if you are interested in both, you can order from either company.
