I am taking my family to the sow bug roundup in Mountain Home AR again this year. I’ve built each of my boys their own fly rods and they are feeling inspired by the upcoming sow bug, and their new rods, and want to tie some flies of their own.
What would be an easy emerger pattern for ages 6,8 & 10 to tie and hopefully catch a few trout on Dry Run creek. Han’s olive and quill is what I am thinking. They will also be tying some zebra midges.
That Olive & Quill looks like a winner. Something like a Pheasant Tail Softhackle might be good, too, either with partridge
or ostrich “hackle”

Good thing about softhackles is that even first tries are so buggy they usually catch fish, which the kids will love.

I think something with wire might be easy to work, but peacock is a good idea as well. Thanks for the pictures, I will let them get involved in the deicison.

Very easy fly to ty and very effective so tie a bunch of them. Vary the sizes too just like Al says in the article. Get them going on those other patterns in the beginners secion as well.
Not an emerger but we caught most of our fish on size16 trout crack with brown midge diamond braid backs on the Norfork,until we had a midge hatch. Then we caught 90 % of our fish on size 18 zebra midges. We also caught fish on size 8 wooley buggers drifted under an indicator or bigger streamers stripped
The trout crack is a simple tie and suggests a sowbug
