Nealley's Drake SBS

Kind of a mutant Comparadun with the wing butts left exposed to add floatation. Tied here as a Green Drake; change colors/size to suit your needs.

hook - TMC 5212 #10
thread - UTC 140 light olive
tail - moose body
body - Uni-stretch light olive
shellback - deer hair olive
rib - Uni-stretch yellow
legs - Sili-legs green flake
wing/wingpad - deer hair yellow/olive mix

Part 1

mash barb, lay a thread base

clean, stack, measure (little less than shank on a hook this long) some moose body; tie in, trim cover with thread

tie in Uni-stretch (ran out of olive, so I ran an olive marker over white); wrap tapered body to 3/4 mark

clean, stack, measure (tips a bit past the bend) some olive deer hair, tie in; tie in rib

criss-cross rib over the shellback, to the rear and back; tie off/trim

tie in legs (tried it after tying in the wing; this sequence worked better for me)

Part 2

clean, mix, stack, a clump of deer hair

measure (shank), trim to length, tie in

pull some of the deer back, take a wrap thru; pull some more back and repeat

pull all the wing back (crease with thumbnail at the base if the hair is recalcitrant); create thread dam to set wing angle

half hitch x 2, SHHAN, trim legs

Scott

Very nice. Was just looking for drakes on a nearby stream just the other day, but in my area this is such a touchy hatch, I rarely ever get to fish it. Might have to add a few of these to the box. Thanks, Scott.
