NE PA Patterns?

I’m tying up a box of flies for my Dad’s 80th birthday which is early next month. He doesn’t fish dries so I am tying wets and nymphs. I’m not that familiar with east coast hatches. I know he likes light and dark Hendricksons. I also have tied PT with and without flashback, Prince, Biot nymph, BWO nymph, Copper John, soft hackles, Diving Caddis, and Graphic Caddis.

Any suggestions? Please include size and color.

How about some traditional wet flies?

Check out the archive on this site. Should be something in there to tie up!

Can’t miss with BWO 22to 16.soft Hackles

                          Hope this works

I tie a soft hackle beadhead PT nymph that works well in the SE part of PA. I use natural, dyed olive and brown. Sizes 12 to 20.

Zug Bugs sz 12, scuds (grey and olive) sz 12-18.

Thanks guys!

Hi,
Hmm, I would suggest (for wets) the following:

  1. a Royal Coachman wet
  2. Greenwell’s Glory
  3. Butcher or Bloody Butcher
  4. Parmachene Belle
  5. Dark Montreal
  6. Jerry Madiddler
  7. Doc Spratley
  8. Invicta
  9. Blue Dun
  10. March Brown
  11. Scarlet Ibis
  12. Black Gnat

These were popular in Nova Scotia when I was young, and my Grandfather fished many of them as well. A Micky Finn streamer would be highly recommended as well.

Two of my favorite underwater patterns for NE PA are a woven body (brown on top and yellow belly) stone fly nymph (some old time friends call it the “Penns Creek Killer”), and a small (size #12 or #14) Picket Pin (and bead head versions also). Although the Picket Pin can be a general purpose imitation, it really comes into its own as an imitaion of the Grannom caddis.

Come to think of it, these are 2 of my favorite patterns regardless of where I’m fishing.

He lives in Clarks Summit. He fishes the Little Lehigh, Lackawaxen, Dyberry, Lackawanna and Tuncannock Rivers. I know my spelling is very poor but you get the idea.

WWFF,
Thanks for your input!

i’d say you gotta have stoneflies, both dark and light, and you gotta have BH caddis pupas, olive and tan. Also it is tough to miss with a zug bug

KOA-1,
Check your PM’s…Ed

All done and in the mail today. Ended up with a little over 100 flies. My Dad’s eyesight is not the best so I tied more sz 12 flies than I have in the last 10 years. However, I did tie one row of sz 20 BH BWO patterns. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
