Nation's Red SBS

Another vintage pattern from Kamloops tyer/guide Bill Nation. This one is supposed to represent dragonflies swimming in some of the lakes; weird stuff up there, I’d declare them Superfund sites.

hook - Mustad 9671 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - brown mallard
rib - oval tinsel silver
body - back half silver tinsel, front half Uni Stretch Chinese red
wing - brown mallard (original appeared to use a clump of stripped fibers: I prefer the look of a flank tip); goose biots red
hackle - hen badger

Part 1

mash barb, start thread 1 eye width back from eye; tie in rib, wrap to bend

measure (shank length) some mallard flank fibers; tie in/trim, finish thread at mid-shank

tie in tinsel, wrap to tail and back; tie off/trim

tie in Uni Stretch at front index point, wrap to tinsel and back; tie off/trim

Part 2

counterwrap rib; tie off/trim

prep mallard flank, measure (tips to tail), tie in/trim

tie in biot (tip to bend) on either side

[

tie in (folded) hackle by tip

wrap hackle, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Merry Christmas, all; to you and your loved ones,
Scott
