Here is a pretty impressive Doppler Radar image of a Hex hatch in progress along the Mississippi River. No wonder there’s so many fat fish in your neck of the woods.

Color me jealous, from the home of the sz. 24 midge pupa.

The radar image is amazing. I’ll bet the guys at the radar center were wondering what was going on!

Growing up in North Alabama, we used to get Willowfly (Hexagenia) hatches so thick the trees along the river would be black with them and the willow trees would be so heavily loaded the branches would be down in the water. If you could catch the beginning of the hatch, the fishing was incredible. After a day a gorging themselves, the fish finally just quit eating and if you did catch one, the belly would be completely distended from eating so much.

I’ve seen some pretty good hatches but I don’t think they ever got picked up by the weather radar. Seems like it might be hard to get your fly noticed with millions of the naturals covering every surface around. 8T
