Name 5 "Go To Flies" !!

Thought this would be fun…
If you only had 5 flies to chose from that you had to fish NATION WIDE.
What would they be??
Here in MO I have found that my 5 would be…
Crackleback
Wooly Bugger
Zebra Midge
Scuds(not really sure about color)
Renagade
I haven’t had the chance to fly fish anywhere else yet so I just put on my MO choices.

Have a good one.
Rich

I guess I should have mentioned TROUT as your species of fish for your flies.

:stuck_out_tongue: My choice would be:

Adams
Lady’s Fish Finder (Grizzly)
Crytal Beetle (Black over Orange)
Green Weenie
Al’s CB Scud (Orange)

Have good times with all of these. John

Keeping in mind my limited geographic reference:

Parachute Adams
Rusty Spinner
Light Cahill
Some type of Gray Caddis
Green Weenie(hate to say that)

Allan

In the Pacific N/W, particularly the inland streams, rivers and lakes would always take with me some:
Caddis (whatever size/color)
Adams (whatever size/color)
Wolly Bugger (whatever size/color)
P/T Nymph (whatever size)
SHWAPF (whatever size/color)
All good for Rainbows, Cutthroat, German Browns, & Bull Trout. Also good for Bass, Crappie and Blue Gills.

OK…here’s mine:

Adams
Tan Caddis
BWO
Sulphur
Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear

A black foam beetle-size 16
A black ant-size 22
A BWO thorax-size 20
A Mercury Midge-size 24
An olive Woolly Bugger-size 8

If I had to pick one it would be the beetle hands down.

1.Elk hair caddis
2.Copper John
3.Wooly bugger
4.Stimulator
5.double bunny

these are my favorite 5 flies and usually work about anywhere i’ve gone in the northwest

5 go to flies for me are:

Wolly Bugger
Adams
Pheasant tail
Gold ribbed Hares Ear
Royal Wulff

For brookies in Cape Breton Nova Scotia my top five would be:

Orange buck bug
Elk hair caddis
Light/ Dark Spruce
Muddler minnow
Small black compra dun or haystack

I would have to select the following:

  1. Wooly Bugger (black or olive)

  2. GRHE

  3. EHC

  4. Parachute Adams

  5. Parachute PMD

8T

In no particular order:

Olive beadhead woolly bugger
Elk hair caddis
Japanese beetle
PT nymph
Green weenie (has been the best all-around fly for me all year and continues to catch 'em!)

Marty
MFTG

Adams(Dry and Wet)
GRHE (Nymph)
Cooperbug aka (Devil Bug)
Dark Cahill (Wet)
Bomber (Dry)
Humpy had to be mentioned…
And a box full of Midges/Chironomids…You’ll never catch me near water without that box!!!

1 Prince Nymph
2 PT
3Stimulator
4 Adams
5 Micro May Fly

Hmmm,

In no particular order

  1. dry: Wickham’s Fancy
  2. wee wet: Invicta
  3. wee wet: Doc Spratly
  4. NC spider: woodcock and orange
  5. streamer : Hammlim minnow (pattern of my own design:
    Tail : yellow fibers
    body : flat silver tinsel
    rib : fine round silver
    throat: red fibers
    wing : pine squirrel tail
cheeks: chesnut brown pheasant wing feathers (or woodcock) to 1/3 body mark.
  • I caught my personal best (7.25 lbs brown) with this last one on the first time that I tried it out, so I’m always expecting it to work. So far, it’s been my best producing streamer pattern, though olive wooly bugger is a close 2nd. Hmmmm, did I just sneak in a 6th there?

:frowning:

I’m going to get very negative here…

At least Trout has been defined but …what type of trout fishing???

At this time in my life I’m a stillwater fisherman…my going toos are going to be wet[seldom a dry]…for stillwater…not rivers… so how is that meaningful to anyone wondering “go too” flies for rivers? I’d give you a different list for the flies I used on rivers, and for rivers ask me if it’s wet or dry…and when I fished…always hit the salmon fly hatch…

IMHO an exercise in futility…

Sorry…fish4trout…I think getting more specific could be more informative…because I think what other folks use is very useful…of course RonMT can never be pinned down…[G]

Lately in no particular order
for Mo and Ok

Crackleback
Wooly Bugger
GRHE
Chamois san juan worm
Stimulator

 There isn’t a definitive type of stream to be mentioned.
If you feel the the need to be specific go right ahead. :?
I’m not asking people for info to write a book.Just a friendly list of what we like to use on our particular waters or waters abroad.
IOW have fun with it

I didn’t see a limit on type of fish (probably missed it). There is a warm water section but…

Smallies seem to like

1-poppers
2-sneaky petes
3-spiders
4-clousers
5-weighted woolly buggers
6-sparkle minnows

and all but 4 and 6 with rubber legs.

I’ve fished for trout a handful of times at best, also in MO. I would have to say:
Griffith’s Gnat
Crackleback
Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear
Woolly Worm
and the Adams

These are the only flies I’ve used and they seemed to work at times.
