looks like a guarenteed bass killer. nice
I think that looks great! Need someone to test it for you???
Keep up the good work and let’s see more flies!
I think it’s time for someone to do a FOTW!!!
Come on Joel! You can do it!
Looks really good…nice job.
That is really nice. Could you post the pattern or some step by steps? Maybe we need a pattern of the week (I think I suggested this twice this week)…cabin fever must be getting to me, we just got another wad of snow today and I spent 1.5 hours with the snowblower…

Where do you guys get the rubber/silicone legs in such a nice variety of colors? I got the rest of the stuff, need legs.
The bass are gonna run me out of the pond this year

Nice job!!! Be sure to also try it on a jig type hook! Iv ordered some 60 degree bend jig hooks to try it on also. Im hoping to be able to get a better hop off the bottom with the 60 degree bend. I also tie the 90 degree jig hook with out the lead and just a bead. Ill fish it under a indy at a controlled depth. the dead stillness of the fly along with the slow action of the legs is irresistible for smallies that are not active. But so far dragging the 90 degree bend on the bottom has been the top producer for smallies. I may have missed it but what did you use for the body?
I get my silly legs form living rubber www.Livingrubber.com
It just dawned on me Joel did I sell you some Murdock minnows a few years ago? If so I guess you are out of the retail market now!LOL!!!
Sagitarrius62,
Thank you for the great video and web site. I can hardly wait to view the other demonstations. 8T
I’ve got a question for the group. Why does the tyer in the spider-grub video use three methods to attach the fur to the body of the fly? He starts out with a dubbing loop, then goes to cross cut rabbit fur and finally uses single thread dubbing. Wouldn’t it be easier to omit the dubbing loop and just tie in the cross-cut fur. He could either do the entire body with the cross cut fur or use two steps and go to the single thread dubbing after the cross-cut fur. Any thoughts? 8T
Well since I designed the fly and did the video Ill answer. The fly is designed to be cast on a 6wt easily. If you wrap the body with zonker, once the strip soaks water it becomes to heavy to cast with a 6. So I cut off the skin and put it in a loop. Thus cutting out most of the skin. The single thread dubbing is to cover the wraps that finish off the zonker and also help hold the blouse shape of the legs giving the legs more spring. The reason I do not loop all the way is I like the fullness in the water of the zonker. So I use different methods to achieve the cast-ability and action. If you plan to fish the fly on an 8. You can wrap it all the way up. When Im on a big order of SG’s I can do 7 to 8 flies an hour.
I don’t have any of those cool clear clips that day5 uses to put the fur in the dubbing loop, so i just used 1/8 zonker strips and wrapped them around the hook…then I used the large chenille which is very light…
The clips are the petitjean tool. The are very handy. But I hear a bulldog clip (big paperclip) can work also. Even heard of chip clips working…
i might have to look in to getting one of those…
I’m the guy that you (day5) tied the murdich minnows for…
5Day,
Thanks for the explanation. I wasn’t being critical. I was just curious about the complex body assembly. I really like this fly and will definitely use your method.
Joel,
The Pettijean clips are expensive (about $30 if I remember correctly.) Go to office depot and get some metal paper holders for less than a buck each. They work just as well. 8T
8T I did nto take it as a bad comment its a good question. Enjoy the fly!
