I emailed JC & LF about this, then thought that it just isn’t fair to “dump” on them without speaking my piece here.
I would like to know WHY some folks are so doggoned secretive in their profiles. Are your “locations”, “interests”, & possibly “occupation” top-secret? FAOL is a COMMUNITY people! A fine, trusted family. I have NEVER been “burned” by one of my FAOL family members, & I don’t feel I will be in the future. I have personally met a lot of really fine folks from this board who I would most likely NOT have met had I been a “mystery” person. A real bonus was finding ol’ Army buddy Dleo6446 through this board & re-establishing that friendship & bond…we were at A-4-1 in Ft Benning, GA together in 1966!
Please tell us about yourself in the profile…it will lead to friendships, fishing buddies, support, & involvement.
Sorry for the rant, but I’m Irish…I would explode if I didn’t!

Personally, mine is filled in but I’m going to change it soon. As for others not completing their profiles, maybe they think that it’s no ones business, they don’t want to get any additional spam or whatever reason they may have. As long as it’s not mandatory, it’s voluntary.
Allan.
I understand it’s voluntary, but posting your geographic location & interests are simply informational things that have, for me, greatly enhanced my experience in this community we call FAOL.

Oh phooey. If you don’t want your email address to show, don’t list it. How can someone expect to be ‘spammed’ by giving their town and interests? On second thought, maybe those are the really important people?
Well, Mike, I am glad you are with us today. You are a great friend. Anyone that is afraid of you really needs to meet you and talk with you. Mean Mikey? Nothing, and I mean nothing, could be farther from the truth.
I agree with your post. I know that we all understand that some of our members are minors and may leave some info blank at the request of their parents. That’s cool. Perhaps others are afraid of the data base being hacked. I don’t think that will happen because J.C. and L.F. run a tight ship here. Besides, we all leave trails to our I.P. and other info from visiting various web sites. It’s unavoidable. I understand that it’s voluntary but, speaking for myself, I am more likely to develope a deeper friendship with those that at least fill out the minimum info.
I think I understand the reticence of some to fill out anything these days and I do not blame them for the caution; at least when they first sign up. I would like to ask that any of you who have not looked at your profile in a while, do so. Remember, the ICQ number can be used for your birth date if you want to, many of us have.
Rookie;
I see you are just under 6 year’s old!? Do we have a child prodigey here? Just kidding. Glad to see the year of birth date as it cue’s me in to whom I’m talking with. Same goes for location.
Don’t forget the Michigan Fish-In August 14th to the 20th. The Holy Water’s of the Au Sable await you!!
My birthday is 12/13/51. The date you saw was the date my little girl passed away. I am actually much older than 55 years. ( just kidding). I’m starting to live again and it’s nice.
Very shortly after filling out my profile here I saw a huge increase in spam. It is not the site’s fault. The spammers have programs to harvest this info.
I’ve left my contact info on FAOL, but haven’t given it to other fly fishing boards. If they need to contact me, I just direct them to FAOL for it. I figure the damage is already done here and see no need to increase my exposure.
Again, this has nothing to do with FAOL or JC & LF. It is just a fact of life about the Net. If you post your contact info on the Net, the spammers will contact you.
How about this for a possibility: Maybe they were members here and made such an a** of themselves and caused so much trouble that JC and LF banned them and now they are back with no info in their profile so that they can be members again and maybe start acting like an a** again and start making trouble again? Just a thought
Larry I also use my full name and if you check my profile I’m the oldest. As you age in younger years you tend to shy away from people knowing how old you are. At my age your glad you lasted this long and can think back on all you have accomplished. Still stream fish ,from a canoe at times hike and best of alll have plenty of time to spend teaching children fly tying and casting.
Yes it bugs me when someone wants advice and I check his or her profile to see where they live and fine nothing.
See?..Bill’s still kickin’ & kickin’ VERY WELL! Posting his info here hasn’t damaged him a bit!!..Right Bill?..and if Bill’s teaching kids, he’s OK in my book!

Hey Mike,
You’re Irish?..I’m a totally, like 100%, full bloodied BRIT. Does this mean I need to delete my personal information then…BG
Jeremy.
P.S. I agree with your points made. I’ve never received troublesome posts or emails due to my addy given out either. But, this is an Int’l. site…who knows??
