My variations on the X-Caddis. A size #16

I might explain. I find that when flaring the hair and tying off in the “normal” way, the “wing” material is flared too high. I prefer a lower profile wing, similar to the real caddis wing. Finishing with a half-bullethead calms down the flaring hair.

“Finishing with a half-hour head times down the flaring hair.” ???

I see what you did- I think.

Chuck

Sorry, “half bullet head”. LOL!!!

Much better! Thanks, Byron.

Chuck

Byron,
Have you tried BRF’s “Stimulator” hair? It doesn’t flair very much at all. I do like the look of the half bullet head, though.

Joe

Same concept applied to a CDC & Elk with a trailing shuck

An alternative way to get a flatter wing is to bend the front 1/3 of the hook shank up as in Gary Borger’s Poly Caddis . Tie the hair in on this bent section of hook and it will lower the wing profile. Example is Borger’s polycaddis below.

Thanks Silver
I find this easier.
After tying the “wings” in, I just tie in some more deer hair at the eye ; bring the thread back a bit; pull deer hair back; tie down semi-bullethead style; and then cut butt ends close.

Takes longer to explain than to do!
