I just got my Christmas present… a little early. I love it! It is amazing! Here is what I tied on it tonight. Both of these patterns were new to me. I have never tied the Humpy before or the Damsel Nymph. This vise makes tying even a bigger pleasure! Man o Man! I love it!
Here is the work of my hand… not the best! I have only been tying for about 7 months and I feel like I have come a long way! Now I need to perfect my skills and learn to tie with a rotary!!! Wish me luck and I hope that these flies are up to par for you and the fish!
A tip: When using dubbing rotate the hook all the way to the top leaving your fingers much more room to move without getting poked by the sharp hook point all the time.
the title of your post give the impression that only the danvise is capable of producing the flies you’re showing but any vise that can hold a hook can do the same thing. its really the talent of the tyer that produces the results and you have proven you have talent.
see page 4 for humpy proportions. your wings seem a little long
You are definitely going to be ready for the spring/summer bluegill season!
They look pretty darn good to me. I am afraid to even try tying a humpy. Anything with that many steps I just don’t know if I wanna start. I mean, I get halfway thru and the ADD kicks in and Hey, is that a butterfly? Man what pretty wings. I wish I could fly. If I could fly I would be off looking for things to dive bomb. Ooooh, I want a bomb pop!
I really appreciate all the nice comments! Thanks a ton for the confidence in my tying abilities. I am really excited to get out and give the flies a shot.
Thanks a ton for the advice too! I will work on my dry fly proportions too (thanks for the link).
Don, why do I have to wait till spring? Too bad it snowed today and the wind is killer!
Have a great Turkey Day everyone! Man, I have lots to be thankful for! Tight lines!
Very nice flies! They look fishy!!
I also have a Danvise. I got it about 2 months ago. It took me forever to get the hang of whip finishing and I was starting to get discouraged. Last week one of my co-workers finally got it through to me and I have been tying a lot this week. I even managed to catch a few fish on my own flies!
I think your flies look good, but you need to re-size your pics to something like 640X480 Pixels. That way you pictures will fit the board. The Internet is made for that size.
I used a Danvise last year and liked it really well, but still had to get another last December so got a Saltwater Traveler with cam jaw and love it. Sold my Danvise to a friend, but kind of wish I had kept it now.
Wow y’all! Thanks for the kind words! I do admit, I just wanted a reason to post some of my handy work… the wife said “you should show some people those!”
The Danvise is awesome, that is just my opinion! For the money, I don’t think it can be beat. Now, I have not tied on anything more expensive and I am sure they have their marvelous advantages.
Bottom line: I am way grateful for all the kind words! Thanks for the encouragement!
Scott;
As has been said, already, several times now… “YOU”, tied the nice flies, your vise did not!". But, I also know, how a “good anything” can influence one’s self pride into doing “just a little bit better”, than perhaps they were able to do before.
I, think, this holds true with stepping up to a finer made fly rod, confidence in your own flies, and as your pictures prove… “tying better, because of your new vise”. Great job, nice flies, keep in truck’in! (and, tying!)

I really like those ties, especially the damsel nymphs. They look great, and I bet fished along a weedbed, those will put you into fish a fair few times! Nicely done.
Can someone answer a question for me. The last couple of days I have really spent a lot of time on the vise and trying to become better at using it. One problem I have is that the spring that comes with the vise, (the one that holds material and wraps around the top of the vise through the little hole), well, it’s kinda long and I can’t figure out how to attach it properly.
If this makes no sense then please feel free to tell me and i will try to paint a better picture to explain what I mean.
I watched the video that Al Beatty did that comes with the vise. He addresses the spring issue. He says that it will need to be cut in order to fit the way that you are explaining. I don’t use the spring (in hopes that I will eventually need the WHOLE spring sometime), mostly because I am not too savvy with tying and I had no idea you could put stuff in a spring to hold it out of the way. He did mention that some models come with a different spring set-up (I am assuming older versions yet I have no real clue).
And, another, option as it were, that can be used on your vise is something shown to me a long time ago… namely; “using a spring from a ballpoint pen refill” in lieu of the one that comes with the vise. Usually, (my several vises, anyway), come with a spring that is gaped too far, to hold the finer copper wires and tinsels that I often like to use.
The ballpoint pen springs, fit tighter and the coils are mush closer together, than the factory spring coils.
