My Midge

Hi All,

Tied this up this morning. I don’t think I invented it, but I don’t know of this particular pattern either. Antron Midge told me the name of the pattern when I called him but I forgot. It’s on a #16 scud hook. Red Firefly tinsel under clear tubing.

Anyways, it worked, catching me a 14-15 inch rainbow today!

I believe it is called a Blood Worm. I tied three or four of them myself lately, but have not tried them out yet. Glad you got bit on your’s!

Good looking fly , even better that the fish like it. I tie this type of fly in a few diffrent colors using jelly rope and glass bead’s. They most often do well.

Just curious, is a size 16 considered a Midge?

bobby

Ohh . . maybe not but it’s in my midge box

Bobby,

Of course a #16 can be considered a midge…

That’s a short shank ‘scud’ style hook…body probably about 3/16 to 1/4 inch long. Some midges get bigger than that, although most are a bit smaller.

Besides, giving the fish a bigger meal isn’t always a bad thing.

Thanks Buddy.
I like it. When it comes to Midges, the bigger the better, if they’re taking!

Love the snickers bar analogy!

A size 16 is as low as I will go…I prefer 12 and up…but for a midge…size 14 is preferable…I have tied a zebra midge…in black and a red one…I have d rib in red, clear, and black. Maybe I will put a glass bead on one…

Was fishing on Roosevelt Lake, in the early morning hours, many summers ago, in the later part of August! The surface of the water was mirror smooth, and there were these little circles on the water surface, that I had seen almost all of my life.

It was then that I noticed for the first time, that elsewhere on the water, were these little tiny dots on the water surface. “Tricos” my thoughts shouted! I was witnessing the morning Trico hatch, as they rested on the surface.

Alas I had no Trico patterns with me, so instead I tossed out a size #14 “Orange Stimulator”, not expecting any action. Next thing I knew, my fly was no longer on the surface, all I could see was a big vortex, where my fly had been a microsecond ago!

Caught a very nice size fish, I think the fish was surprised by the “Orange Stimulator”, as much as I was surprised by the strike!

So that is my contribution to the “Snicker Bar Theory” chronicles. ~Parnelli
