My flyfishing vest

Hi.
I’ve got a very strange question, hmm.

I have a fishing vest from Scierra, it’s bothering me that there is one thing on it I don’t know I should/could use it for

It has a velcro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velcro) fastening in the upper part, but the “hooks” are all facing inward, there is a small pease of velcro that comes with it, mabe 1cm x 4cm, it can be fastened with the other velcro.
I don’t know if you understand my description, the velcro is as I said with its back fasing out.

I don’t have a clue what this is for :frowning:

Regards,
Thorarinn.

Could it be used to help hold your fly rod while you tie on a new fly?

This is what I was thinking. Any chance you could post a picture?

Holding Fly rod when crossing river, tying fly on, or releasing fish, etc… any time you need two hands,

I looked at a photo of your vest in the Scierra catalogue…I presume your vest is an “AeroFlex”. As I see it, in http://www.scierra.com/ecatalogue/flash.html#/38/, there is an attachment on the outside of the vest, in what would be your right upper chest, that I believe is a rod holder. On the outside of the left upper chest pocket, there is a detatchable foam patch for flies. Are you referring to either of these locations?
If not, could you post a photo? :confused:PRM

It took me forever to figure out what that was for too. My vest is not a Scierra, but I have the Velcro too.

It is for holding your rod. It is probably on your left side when you are wearing your vest? There should be a loop at the bottom of your vest on the other side. Put the butt of your rod into the loop, and then you can fasten the Velcro over the rod. This way it frees up your hands to tie knots etc.

I don’t mean to highjack your thread, but I’ve had a 4 decade long search for the perfect fly fishing vest. I’m still looking.

Here is a picture.
No it’s not a rod holder, it (the rod holder) is above this “thing”.
It’s the “thing” left of the flies, you can see the small piece of loose velcro that I can put inside the “thing”.

The velcro is on the inside, you can see the back of it on the picture.

Thorarinn.

And BSwan, I know what you’re talking about

I have made some changes to this one, even sewn in a velcro to hold the fly pad, so I have “warm feelings” toward this one and probable wan’t buy a new one for a while, unless…

Is this it???; also no hijack intended…

As long as we’re guessing, I’ll say that the slot and tab are for holding hemo’s ( like this set up on the back side of my fanny pack ) or debarbing pliers. If not that, then how about for inverting a bottle of floatant, like those that have the little loop of bead chain hanging from their base.

Regards, Dave

The hemostats on my picture would fall throu the “thing”, there is no flap there, it’s just loose velcro piece, 1x4 cm.
Bottle of floatant would also fall throu without something to fasten it.

I think we are getting warmer, keep them coming, I just have to know what this is!

Thorarinn

No Flap? Then that Velcro strip is sewed down it’s entire length?

Off hand, does the inside of the slot have any velcro in it?

O.K., Then how about a flashlight with one of those pen style clips on it. ;^)

Dave

Yes, sewed down it’s entire length.
Yes, it has velcro in it, the velcro is on the inside, the backside is out, just “plastic” on the outside.
mmmmm, maybe, but why the velcro, the must be something genious behind it being there???

Wasn’t it Loon that offered their plastic bottles of paste floatant with a strip of adhesive backed velcro running down one side, or was that just a thing that some angler were doing themselves, aftermarket? Again, possilbly for holding an inverted bottle of floatant.
Speaking of inverted bottles, it’s dinner time here, so I think I’ll go invert a bottle of Napa Valley’s Best.

Good Luck with your quest. Dave

How about emailing the company?

Desperate needs goes for desperate methods.

Maybe I try that.

I did some digging and that looks like the Nevada model of vest. The Product Description I saw on all of the websites that I looked at read thusly:

“A lightweight vest with a great storage ability. Comes with four large front pockets for fly boxes (two of them with mesh cover,) three chest pockets of which one is equipped with Lamb’s wool inside for fly storage/drying. Inside holds three zip locked pockets and four smaller standard pockets. It also has a large back pocket plus two smaller side pockets and on top of all that, two lined hardwarmer pockets. A total of 19 pockets! You will also find a rod holder strap, two holders for hook remover/piler, a D-Ring and a landing net holder ring in the neck.”

I’m guessing that the ‘thing’ in question is one of the hook remover/pliers holders. It can be seen in the pictures of the vest on the various sites.

Thank you Kevin.

The description matches, this must be the Scierra Nevada model.
Mine is about 10yrs old and the only thing that does not match 100% is the description of the “thing”, it says " two holders for hook remover/piler", mine has only one holder, maybe the newer ones have been split in two.

But you are 100% right, thank you again for your digging, I tried to google around but didn’t find this model, only the newer ones.

Phew, that mistery solved
After all this I have reorganized my vest and I saw f.ex. that it has three pockets that can be used as tippet holder pocekts, so I put the tippet there, one less thing dangling about. The holder is a bit too large for my pliers, but I’m still thinking about that one.

Thanks,
Thorarinn

ps. before your answer I had emailed the company, lets see how good their service is, I will post their answer here if I get one.
