That is one nice looking fly. Mine never looked that good when I started, some don’t even look like that after years.
Congrats, that’s a great looking fly.
Thanks just finished up number two, trying things out. Well with the internet these days and you tube make things much easier.
Fly#2
Added a hackle collar to this one and my head is much better this time.
Now the fish are not going to care, but I try to keep the head on my flies about as long as the eye on the hook. I actually like your first head best.
Nice looking flies. Getting a pretty head is tough to start.
Mike,
I prefer fly#2. Those are excellent 1st flies. Mine weren’t near that good & still aren’t!
Mike
Thanks for comments, here is one last one. Then I must tie some eggs.
Very nicely done, Mike! Like what some of the others were saying…my first flies were HIDEOUS! I’m so glad I didn’t take pics of them. Post more of yours!
Good tying ! If mine turned out that good, I’d take pictures of them , too!
Your a natural. Great looking stuff, like the head on number two, very smooth and nice taper. The real deal is that if the fly is durable the fish don’t care, but as tiers we care more about many of the small things or technical aspects of the game.
You don’t know it yet, but you are really screwed now. Your going to have the bug as bad as the rest of us poor bastids who can’t quit tying the next “gotta have” fly. Welcome to a wonderfully addicting hobbing. Congrats, oh I meant to say that I am really sorry for you.
This fly with black rabbit and chartreuse collar would be killer on bass. Whats the collar? Looks like maybe blood maraboo?
Collar is rabbit two tone pinky shrimp.
Just finished another one, spey type pattern.
I like this one a lot.
Quit tying and go try them oout. I know here in Idaho on the Salmon they would work very well.
It is dark out harley!!! This is addicting wow!!! I need more materials for variation!!
Here is another, leech pattern, tied zonker style.
thanks for the kind words,
Mike
That blue leech patter is great! It’s guys like you that keep the rest of us addicted. Now you got me digging through my zonkers strips and seeing if I have everything…Oy vey! might need to swing by the fly shop, er…um, go “Christmas shopping” this weekend.
There are a lot of great instructions on Fly Tying here on FAOL. There is the 60 part series by Al Campbell, that cover just about every procedure as part of the various 60 articles on advancing from Beginner to Intermediate to Advance Fly Tier. Then since it seem you are into Steelhead fly patterns on Salmon Hooks, there is Ron Lucas’s Atlantic Salmon series that includes Steelhead Instructions.
Lots of Instructions available of FAOL, plus all the Step by Step Instructions for most of the Fly Of The Week Articles.
If you are limited on Internet usage time because of dial up on you telephone line, I have all of the above available at no charge, to download to you if you email me at [EMAIL]parnelli@comcast.net
The download are in PDF format, so you need the Free Adobe Reader download that I also can download with your request. ~Parnelli

Well did this guy today, amazing when you tie in daylight and come out of the vampire cave.
You have the gift for fly tying and photgraphy. Let us know how the fish.
