thats not a resto job honestly bugman made the blank for me. and did the reelseat end showing me how to do it and he wraped the tip as well. i did the center and the ferrals.
this is the set coming in to add to my collection. the un named one will have and extention added inorder to apply a reel seat and handle then be scraped cleaned meaured and re guided and wraped. the moneque (spelt wrong.) will be stripped clean re guided. the gri will be salvaged if i can the reel seat will be wire brush cleanded then pollished with jewlers rouge till nice and clean and shiny unless it un salvageable. the furalls need to be replaced on all. the one tip with the set will first be casted to try to remove the set with the help of bugman. if the set will not come out then it will be carefully heated and the set bent out of it. . both rods will have aggit strippers and tips i think and i havent decided on the wrapping colours as of yet.

Oh, ok…i took your wording the wrong way. Wow, i like the looks of that unnamed one. The Monty should turn out nice with the effort. I wonder how Bugman feels about just placing the guides ‘under the curve’ on the set tip.

the set will mostly come out with some casting of a 7wt through it a few times or heating it slightly from the research i have read.
the unnamed one will need and extention added to hold the grip and reelseat.
Not bad at all for a first Charlaine. If I may make a suggestion?..I know wraps can really be a pain to get packed tight on a hex shaped cane rod, but pick yourself up a burnishing tool for $1.95 like this one http://www.mudhole.com/Shop-Our-Catalog/Wrapping-Finishing-Tools/Gudebrod-Burnishing-Tool it makes it a lot easier to pack the wraps as well as smooth them out so there’s no gaps between the thread. Makes life a lot easier on them hex shaped cane rods:)…which is sounds like your going to be doing more of soon so I think you would find it very handy to have.
BTW- You and my niece would get along great, because everytime she comes over her toe nails are always either bright blue or bright lime green lol

ok so i rewarped the stripper guide is this better i like it better as well.
Looks better Char:) packed nicely and the shorter overall length of the wraps looks better as well. Just another tip…you can get rid of the little fuzzies on the wrap by taking a lighter and quickly passing it underneath the thread and it will shrink them up for you. Just light the lighter away from the thread (keeps any soot off the thread that way) and don’t get it closer than about 1" as you pass it under quickly.
BTW …don’t them pink nails clash with the blue toes?? LOL

the two canes are going out Thursday and should be here by Tuesday.
They’re going to be fully overhauled.
The first one the Montague I’m gong to try to keep semi by keeping the original reel seat and grip after a good cleaning and polishing but the wraps are going to be changed. I’m thinking on the colour still I’m thinking Pink and Gold or Burgundy and Hunter or even plain Black and Gold. As for the tip with the set, It can be fixed most likely by casting it a while, That’s what bugman says and if that doesnt work i’ll heat it with his help in order to remove the set or possibly reglue the whole thing.
I need to look at the ferrules and see how bad they are after a good cleaning and polishing to see if their salvageable. As it was said that their cracked. I have a feeling the cracks are not cracks but the separations on the upper half of that type of guide. If they are un useable then I will look into having then fixed. Or I might save up to replace the set with the same type. The guides I’m thinking on still. I would like to get an agate stripper for it. But it may have to wait a while. The rest of the guides are going to be classic snakes in stainless. If I need to change the reel seat I want to go with a rosewood down locking slip ring. I’m also thinking of making a pvc rod case with a leather shell for it as well. To give it that classic feel.
As for the second, It will need a reel seat and grip. I have a feeling it was for a spin/fly combo kit that was made by Southbend. The type where you flipped the grip to go from fly rod to spin. If this is the case then i’m going to try to keep with it and mimic the setup once i have done more research on the rod. I will have more information once I have it in hand. The wraps on this rod are going to be golden wheat colour with black or brown accents. The grip id like is a mixed cork grip like what’s seen here http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=20544&hl=pink. The guides will be a matched set of spinning guides that will work for fly fishing as well. My impression is that this rod used the old style of bait casting reels so I will be on the hunt for an inexpensive one.
The tip of using the lighter is the way I used to take care of the fuzzies until:
Purchased several polishing sticks used by professional nail shops. Can not even purchase them except from supply houses that cater to the beauty shops. Forget the name of them but they have micro grit and one can buff out the wraps on our rods to the point they even feel smooth to the touch of your finger tips. (Just went back to the Boo shop and pulled out a new one from stock. It says: Sand Turtle Gleemer. Green = Buff. White = Shine. Try feeling how rough your thread is after wrapping. Makes a solid, perfect wrap. The suggestion of using a burnishing tool is the only way to go. I use my thumb nail as I wrap, keeping it perfect. I wrap only with silk, YLI, #100. Comes in 200 meter spools, standard size and way more colors than I could ever need. (I also use it for fly tying, exclusively, is just a bit smaller dia than 8/0) I do not coat with epoxy (course I do mostly only Bamboo rods today) just several coats of my spar varnish, 2 coats, polish, re coat, polish, then dip in the same spar varnish, two coats. Makes an outstanding finish. My dip tube is home made, fill (almost) w/spar, insert rod, drain slowly, special speed at guides. Presto perfect wraps. I personally do not care for the build up of epoxy, but some do like it. To each his or her own. Just my 2 cents worth. There are a lot of ways to do rods. None of which are the only way. After doing many, many rods over the years I have settled on a way that produces what I and my customers like. I especially like the results on restorations that we do now and then.

Well You poked fun ( not complaining)and made sugestions so I went and did it. I rewraped the entire first section of the rod. not that i’m complaining as i like the look better now myself. even added a hook keeper as well. Went so far as polished the winding check and reel seat hard where. I’ll post pics of the work in a while. Thanks for all the help and sugestions. when the other two rods come in i’ll be posting a full restoration thread on each so watch out.:eek:

You are too funny!! You re wrapped the whole thing AGAIN??? You going for the third time’s the charm?? It is funny the little things we see after we think we’re done with a rod!! I couldn’t begin to tell you how many I’ve re-re-wrapped! Think you’ll like having the hook keeper on there, too! Big thumbs up for you!!!

well it is only the first section and i just took off the wraps that where not mine. i’ll leave the tip but just had to redo it besides the more i looked at her the more i didnt like the wrapes and the way the wraps didnt seem to meet right at the upper most guide and the ferral. I wanted it seamless so i removed the wraps and found a dip where the ferral raised a little bit. so i carfully wrapped the well with thread till it was filled and them coated it with sallies hard ad nails. then I wrapped the guide and ferral and got a seemleess finish i was happy with. next is to pollish the stripper guide insert nice and shiny hehe…“ok where are the q-tips”
its funny i find rod wrapping almost as calming as fly tying. I wonder if building would be the same.
