My Boo is broken !!!

I have a question for everyone.
Monday was my last day of vacation and I went to Mtn Creek in Mt Holly Springs for some flyfishing diversion. Trouble never comes in ones I guess because
the bamboo rod I was given for Christmas snapped at the bottom of the female ferrule. Go figure… no snags on the water or the trees. It just was casting poorly and on the last cast the top flew off into the creek. I thought at first the ferrule had just come apart but after “reeling” it in the truth become known. It’s an ebay South Bend that my brother in law refinished for me.
Is a repair feasible here? I don’t think two inches less of length would matter to me.
Thanks
Bernie

well you can fix it.

Breakage at the base of the female ferrule can happen when too much bamboo is removed when installing the ferrule. I would not be surprised if it has not been broken there before. If you just trim the shortened section and reinstall the ferrule you are just asking for more of the same kind of breakage.

Your rod can be repaired. I have repaired some rods that were in awfull shape. I would suggest you have a new piece spliced onto the broken section to make it full length and of a size to properly fit your ferrule. You will be much happier in the long run with the results.

Thanks for the reply Fishbum. Saves me from finding out the hard way on the repair. Heritage Angler sent me a PM for an outfit located about 45 minutes from my house and I will look into that.

Bernie - No worries. Wyatt can fix that rod, and it’ll be BETTER than new. He’s a true craftsman, and learned from a master bamboo rod builder. The guy he learned from was the late George Maurer (recognize the last name?). George lived up in Cammal, and you drove through there at the Fish-In.

If you value your bank account, do NOT look at any of his new rods! His work is incredible, and last I heard, there is a one year waiting list to have a rod built by him. Poke around his website - you’ll figure out pretty quick that you’ll be in good hands.

I wonder if Tom Finkbiner at Slate Run Tackle has any of G Maurer’s rods left.

Heritage,

Thanks for the site for viewing. Looks like Wyatt and co. can put out some nice rods and I’m sure they’d be a treat to deal with.

I recently sold a Geo. M. Spring Creek 7 1/2 4wt to a fellow in Calif. It was an “extra” rod…if there is such a thing g.

I spoke with George because he replaced a loosened guide on that rod (for free) and we had quite a chat on the phone. What a character…what a card! This was 9 mos before he left us so unexpectedly.

I love a good hand-crafted cane stick. Love 'em.

Jeremy.
