Mustad is planning to discontinue their standard fly tying hook lines, example: 9672, 9671, 94840, 3906b, etc.
They have brought out a new line to supposedly solve some problem of specification of these old standard models, a problem with specifications in hook size changes from model to model. Mustad’s new line is the “signature” line, and to insure that we know what the replacement model is they incorporate the old model number with the new one, ie: old 94840, new R50-94840.
This is not a rumor, I phoned Cabelas and Hook and Hackle yesterday, when I found out that the old standard models are not in this years Hook and Hackle catalog.
To read more about this, and what I think we should do, see my post in the fly tying section of these boards.
I edited the title of this post and the note to reflect the current understanding of what has happened. (1/13/09. Gandolf)
Glad they’re givin’ us a warning !
Would have stung to be caught
unawares so’s I wouldn’t have
been able to stock up ! Now
who has the most reasonably
priced mustard hooks I wonder?
Thank you Mr. Panman, I’ll drag out all my
empty mustad boxes in the morning and see
what I can replace from the great list…maybe
some Eagle Claw while I’m at it ! Thanks
again Panman… !
Go to the Fly Tying Bulleting Board. Dr. Fish has given the explantion of what has happened.
What I was advised is simply wrong. The new hooks are priced similarly to the old, a bit more it looks like, but similarly.
Mustad is discontinuing the standard line, but they had to, as shop owners were replacing them with the new chemically sharpened hooks the customers were asking for, and Mustad was going to completely lose out.
I should have checked out everything before posting the information that I was told, not just verified some of the story.
I have done considerable damage, and have done a disservice.
I apologise to Mustad, Dr. Fish, and to you all.
The old Mustad line is still my favorite, and I still think that they are stronger than some “premium” hooks that I have tried, but the old standards are going away…Mustad had no choice. I am still planning to try to stock up on the old hooks. The only thing I ever disliked about the old standard hooks was the large barb, but other than that I thought they were great iron.

Gandolf while your way of expressing it may have been over the top, I’m sure everyone knows that your concerns were legitimate.
As far as doing a disservice, as a result of your post we now have the full story, clear, concise with out the rumors. Any Damage you may have done is probably minimal.
If you take me for example, your post brought the situation to my attention something that might not have happened had I not seen your post.
The result of your post for me is that I am looking forward to trying the new mustad hooks.
more of us who didn’t primarily use Mustad hooks in the past may again try them. Something that wouldn’t have happened with out your post.
You may have brought new customers to Mustad through this posting.
