Thank you for the notes. I may have to go with something like the 3366, but would like to find 3906Bs, if possible. The largest size of 3906B I have seen listed is the #4s.
The reason for the down eye is that I want the Clouser to swim hook point up. Of course the lead or brass dumbell eyes are the main reason that it swims hook point up, but it seems like the down eye should also help.
I do have a small number of 3366s, 3399s, 7957Bs, 3906s, 9671s, and 3906Bs, in size #4 and larger, but not many. The #4 9671 is the same length as the #4 3906B, but the gap on the 3906B is noticibly larger than that of the 9671, and the larger gap appeals.
The #2 3399s I have are about the same length as the #4 3906B, and has a slightly greater gap.
At any rate, it would be nice to find the 3906Bs, but I may have to go with one of the other alteranatives that have been mentioned. Thus if anyone knows whether #2 3906Bs were made, and if there are some around that are reasonably priced, please advise.
I steer clear of the 3906B in larger sizes for trout because I’m afraid that with that larger gape, there’s a greater chance of the hook poking around in the fish’s brain. Have you checked out the Eagle Claw 413 - cadmium plated, but it has an in-line eye angled at 60 degrees; really like using them for clousers for peacock bass and they come in #2 and up.
Thanks for the notes. Normand, I had tried to pull up the site you listed at the front of the post, but for whatever reason, it would not pull up, so I gave up on it. After Duckstermans post, I again tried, and it came up. Thanks to you both for the information, and thus, Mustad made the 3906Bs in #2, and the site has them for sale. My apology for not following up on your reply until looking at it today.
ScottP, I am wanting these hooks to tie up Clousers for crappies, not for trout. I do have jig hooks in #2 to #8, but not that particular brand. They are for unweighted to very lightly weighted streamers. Good point of the concerns for trout with large hooks though. I had read something about concerns for trout with large hooks in the past too.
Wayneb, I will be looking at those, I had looked at one of the sellers of large volumes of older Mustad hooks on Ebay, but don’t know it this is the one or not. At any rate, I will be looking at his hooks.
Again, thanks to you all for the good help, it is much appreciated.
I tie Clousers on both straight eye hooks, and turned down eyes. I find it changes the action of the fly. It’s subtle, but sometimes one or the other does seem to make a difference. Other times it doesn’t.
Hi Gandolf, Long time away from this board. I have 3906B from 4s to 8s. 9671s from 2 to 16. 9672’s from 4 to 16. 7947A from 10 to 14. 7957B from 10 to 16.
2 or 3 thousand total. Back in the 80’s when I was tying 4 to 5 thousand dozen a year, I stocked up bog time. Let me
know if you can use any of these.
It is great to see you post again, as I remember you posting back on the old Virtual Fly Shop board several years ago. I had just begun tying back then. Hope things are going well for you.
If I am unable to find pretty much the exact hook, I will send you a private message. Thank you very much for the offer.
You did a great job on “Production Fly Tying”, I really appreaciate my copy, and even though having tied for many years now still look things up in it every now and then.
Wayne
I was looking for Carrie Stevens streamer hooks about 6 months ago and found HarLee Rod in a Google search linked to AMAzon. They happened to have the exact 3907A hooks made just for ridiculously long streamers. They sold me 500 size 2 for about $12, with free shipping! They were great to deal with and solved my Carries Stevens presentation tying problems for life!
Do not use eBay if you need something as it is cheaper to go direct and save them the fees…
