To all of you who fish Furled Leadres,
Which color of Mucilin, or what do you use as a floatant?

Red, Mucilin
Denny
Only RED will do.
Red Mucilin.
Mike
Add another vote for the red tin (or plastic).
Why red and not green?
I use the green…
Steve
Just to be different I use “Loon Payette” floatant.
Yup, the best choice IMHO.
It does eveything Mucilin does…
…except melt and leak all over your vest!
And plain old Johnson’s Paste Wax is still several orders of magnitude cheaper and very effective…
I fish leaders furled from Danville 210 Flymaster Plus fly tying thread almost exclusively. Don’t put anything on them. They sink. But they don’t sink a dry fly. In fact, they won’t sink a size 18 dry with a small dropper in moderate current. I suspect that you get a better drift with a submerged furled leader than with one with any kind of floatant on it, and it’s a lot less fuss and mess.
Wondering if anyone else has tried furled leaders for dry flies without trying to make it float ??
John
Dave, like John Scott, i don’t put anything on my furled leader and it doesn’t pull drys under. I do have an 18 to 24" section of tippet attached
to the end though.
It didn’t actually occur to me that i needed to put anything on it to be
honest.
Cheers,

I have used the red top Mucilin on my furled leaders for the past 8 years. I find if you do not use anything you will pick up water and it will spray on the surface of the water as you cast it. It will put down fish at times.
I agree with HAP, Johnson paste wax works fine, I just keep too much stuff in my fly vest to put in a can. Maybe I will fill an empty Red top can with the wax. Thanks HAP for ringing my thinkin bell. Sure is cheaper, for sure.
I think the wax might last longer than Mucilin. Will have to check to see which holds longer. I know the Mucilin does melt and make a big mess in one of my vest pockets.
Denny
I also use furled leaders and don’t put anything on them.
Bill
I use a wax that I have been developing for furled leaders. So far, good results from me and the people that have tried it.
Brad
I was told about Albolene Makeup remover. & I’ve been using it . I wipe down my leaders with it right before I start twisting them & again as they furl. It keeps them up for hours, I also use the Albolene as a fly floatant … It looks like Gink, Smells like Gink, Works like Gink But is a hell of a lot cheaper
I like the Red myself and yes it does breakdown and melt away easy. That is the reason why I use it, It was explained to me a few years back of its content purity and how well it cleans out of the leader with the sliding of the thumb along its length.
Without getting into the whole this is better and that is better, it is just my choice of floatants.
Back to the question of Red Vs. Green I believe you will find that the Green has a silicone base.
What is wrong…or so bad about a silocone base?
Gem
I fish bamboo and do not want silicone of any kind to get close to my rod;refinishing would be the pits. I would guess if you use tupperware it would not be a problem. YMMV
mcsteff
And that answers my question on Red vs Green
Thank you!
Steve
Got it.
Thanks MC and Steve
