Mountain lake trip was a no-go

Me and my friend were extremely excited for out first mountain lake fishing/camping trip, as well as our first outing without supervison. About three quaters of the way up the trail we hit snow …and lots of it, about 3 feet in some areas. When we reached the lake it was a relief: 70 degress and the brookies were hittin hard. Once we caught a few trout, we needed dinner. So on to fire, this is were our problem started. Due to the snow, most of the larger logs were still wet in the center, allowing our fire to last only long enough to cook a fish, then die out. Eventually we figured out, even with the 70 degree weather, that our little lake in a bowl was going to cool down fast with all the snow, and we had no fire. So, we headed back to the pick-up at dusk. The trip was still very fun, and in a few weeks the snow will be gone. This trip, however, taught me a few things: Always be prepared for anything, i’m not invincible like I thought I was, and that mountain lakes are going to be a blast! Gotta go tie some flies for next time.

“Worst Day of Fishing”, always beats the, “Best Day of Work”

Tip for finding dry fire wood, look for branches that are vertical, not horizontal. They will be lot drier on the inside.
