More Silk

I decided to try BLUE base with Yellow silk looking for the ultimate GREEN.

Turned out pretty cool:

Here is the thread used:

Laid down the base of Blue thread with a copper wire included plus tied in the Yellow Silk:

Then I covered with side by side YELLOW SILK and ribbed with copper wire:

Finished up the Chironomid with Peacock and White Ostrich for gills:

NOW ADD WATER:

OLIVE!!!

Super color. Well done FG

used it yet? how does it work?

That’s awesome. Color really changed when it got wet. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,

Great result FG. For a willow grub pattern (small pale yellow) I’ve done similar by laying a base of bright yellow, then overlaying white floss laid thin. I liked them, and did some with a red base colour, and green. I called them chameleon flies due to the colour change. Never thought to blend two colours like yellow and blue though. Looks really good. The silk would probably work better too.

Good lokking fly! Where do you get that brand of silk thread?
Steve

Very innovative pattern. I never thought of mixing colors before.

Fly Goddess; I love all the silk blending you do! What color YLI silk did you use?

biot Midge: YLI silk 100 is available from several online suppliers, even one on ebay. Just do an internet search for YLI 100 silk thread. It’s very similar to Pearsalls in thickness and texture, just more economical since the thread comes in 200 meter spools for aboout the same price. Also the spools fit a standard bobbin.

Wayne

I guess you got the ultimate green, nice job.

Nice job on this fly!

We switched over to YLI silk for all of our rod wrapping a few years ago. Love it.
Here is the place we get our silk. Comes in 200 meter spools, most come in lesser amounts.
The color selection is fantastic. I have always had excellent service from them

FG:

I like your vise; Sunrise India maybe? That base is a new one on me.

I have the small base with the screw and rod that allows you to screw it into a stump when your hand gets tired of holding it.

The fly is great too, BTW!

The vise was in a little travel kit I bought several years ago. There is a pretty good magnet on the base.
I mainly use this vise for showing flies anymore. The Renzetti and Vosseler get all the action.

Denny, thanks for the link.

The possibilities just plan make my head spin. Thanks so much for sharing this idea ! I see on the link that they also have 50 wt, is that finer diameter ?

51,
I dug around and found it. 50 wt thread is heavier than 100 wt.

Denny,Joanie,
I was looking at the 7 spool “collections” and have a request.
What colors do you use the most for your flies? Not necessarily color numbers, just general color descriptions. I figure, since I would be getting 1 spool “free”, I could stand to have 1 color I didn’t like in the group.
I just have a hard time making up my mind on something like this.

Kirk

That’s tuff. I use RED allot, but also White, Yellow and Orange.

Must have Black. I now use no other thread, just many colors of silk to tie all my flies with

Tip in using silk thread for tying: By using the Daiichi 1182, which is Crystal Finish (shiny like chrome but is not plated, when silk wrapped on this hook, when wet does drive fish crazy. The color is outstanding and the fish must see this. Some say to wrap Mylar or something similar under the silk. Alex Jackson who is a friend of mine turned me onto the 1182 several years ago for my soft hackle flies. They are so simple and effective.

Almost all my Soft hackle flies are: 1182 hook, bed YLI silk, color you want for a body, tie in two or three turns of JV hen hackle, whip a small head, being careful to not tie onto the hackle because if you do it will kill the undulating action of the JV Hen. Presto, quick and simple and a very effective fly.
I am a Dealer for Daiichi so have used them a lot. I do not show the Daiichi hooks on my site but have sold them for several years.

Denny

What would happen to the bodies if you put …say SH Hard as Nails over it?

umm dumb question. why not just one color to equal the same thing
