More great pictures. I really like the one with the fly in the fishies mouth. What kind of fly is that? It almost looks like a black Bully’s Bluegill Spider. But I’m sure it’s not.
tlerm,
That is a Reversed Spider pattern. If you type in Reversed Spider in the search window here on FAOL home page you can see it plus the tying instructions. It shows as a steelhead pattern, but, I liked the looks of it and down sized everything to make it a trout pattern. My changes are:
I tie it on a number 10 or 12 hook
I use pheasant herl from a tail feather to create the tail
I wrap 6 wraps of .025 lead on the hook shank in the “thorax” area
I use olive chenille for the body and start it behind the front collar instead of in the middle as the instructions state because the lead wraps will create the taper for the body
For the hackle collar up front I use either a brown hen hackle feather or a feather from a pheasant rump patch
I have caught many trout on this pattern plus walleye, bass, bluegill, catfish and just about anything that swims.
It does not seem to be as effective in early spring but around mid summer when the bugs and spiders along the shore are real active, it is my “go to” fly and works into the Fall until the frost eliminates the bugs.
Here is a picture of it with my changes:
Looks good Warren.
