Mop Fly

I haven’t tried this but it looks like a fat caterpillar that I can see a fish devouring. The difficulty ranks up there with the San Juan worm.

Gotta go mop shopping.

Cool, even I can tie that!

Here is one more youtube video of a tie using a cone head instead of a bead.

I scored a Microfiber Chenille Dust Glove in a green real close to chartreuse at Lowe’s HIW yesterday.

Uncle Jesse, I really like this pattern. I catch the large majority of my fish on simple easy to tie patterns and this one will be in my flybox very soon. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Jim, It just looked “fishy” to me, the tan reminded me of Japanese beetle grubs (which thankfully I haven’t seen in a while.) I have been checking around for cheap sources Dollar Tree had some blue dusters, but I couldn’t convince myself that was a good color. Maybe next spring I can finally take you up on your invitation and come do a beta test.

This cool weather is slowing things down a bit, but I did get out the other afternoon and did okay. I was using a spinning rod because all the leaves and pine needles in the water make fly fishing very difficult as they seem to snag on every cast. I ended up catching 23 bass with the largest right around five pounds. After I watched the video you posted the link to, I went to Amazon.com and bought the chenille dust mops in four colors (chartreuse, pink, purple and beige) from here. http://www.amazon.com/Accmart-Cleaning-Cleaner-Slippers-Office/dp/B00V4LIUEM/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1447622607&sr=8-11&keywords=chenille+dust+mop At $2.97 each and with free shipping, it easier and cheaper than shopping at stores for me. I’ll let you know how they do but you’re right, they just look fishy to me as well and that’s what I like in a pattern. I’ll let you know when things warm up again and we can get out and play with the big bream.

Tied some this morning, and was able to get out this afternoon. Second cast caught a nice brook trout, after that I caught three rainbows. Definitely will keep some in my fly box from now on, need to find some more colours.

What color were you using? I have found only green so far. I am looking for a tan or beige.

How does this differ from the chenille we all have?

If you go to Amazon and put “microfiber chenille” you will find items of about every color and prices from $100 down to about $3.

Bluegill Bud, Check on Amazon.com. I think you’ll find the other colors you’re looking for.

Green, it was what I had in the Garage for washing the cars. I just snipped a few that happened to be inside the glove. I added a glass bead (orange) and a collar of black peacock dubbing.
I will be on the lookout for tan/beige or grey as well.

Bluegill Budd,

Here’s the beige mop slippers that I bought. I’ll let you know how they look when they get here and I tie up a couple of the Mop Flies.

Hey Gang,

I would suggest using https://www.amazon.com/ instead of plain http://www.amazon.com/ The https gives a more secure connection. I choose that option whenever it is available for any site.

Ed,

Does the added s on the end of http direct you a a secure site? I’ve never heard of this before. Thanks for sharing this.

Jim Smith

It uses a different protocol to connect to the site. It attaches to their server using a (theoretically) secure protocol and a (theoretically) secure port. Please remember that even so, security is never absolute with the Internet, but this is more secure.

I must be fishing over dumb trout, after reading about how great the mop fly is I bought a pack of several different colors, Tan, beige, gray, blue, & Chartreuse, been fishing he now for 3 weeks and only caught 1 trout on the mop, I fish 2 flys so to be fair the mop was my lead fly, I always had the mop on but I did change colors. The last count was Mop flys 1 trout my regular flys 19

I always say dumb trout are the ones who do take my flies. Welcome to the forum, by the way.

Scott
