Montana/Wyoming Fly Lists

Hello everyone,

Going back out to Montana to fish the Bighorn for 3-4 days and then down to Wyoming to fish in Yellowstone for a few days. I have a lot of flies from previous trips, just curious if anyone would be willing to share their own lists on what they will take or have taken on thier trips. The lists that I have are basically the ones given by each of the shops that are out there, but when we fish with the guides, we have rarely if ever used any of the flies that we have brought.

Regards,

joe

Wow…thanks a bunch Normand…I think…that I can tie some of those…they are small but don’t seem to be too intricate.

Good stuff.

When are you making your way into Jellystone?

If late July/Early August, for Soda Butte, Lamar Rivers, I’d suggest terrestials (ants, small hoppers), and Sparkle PMD’s.

Paul

Hello Paul,
I am going late August. Have plenty of the terrestrials but don’t have any of the sparkle PMD"s …I’ll get em’…thanks !!

maybe some green drake at buffalo ford middle to late august. size 8/10 adams/parachute adams work well.

Joe,
I have a hatch chart for this area. If you PM me with the time you will be here, I’m happy to share the information that I have with you. Best Regards…

Joe,

Check out the trip planner section on the Parks Flyshop site:

http://www.parksflyshop.com/planner.htm

Lots of good info on waters/hatches/flies to use. By the way, supposed to be a hopper infestation of biblical proportions in the west this year. Hope you catch a bunch of fish.

Scott

Here is another hatch chart for the area

hay Joe…that’s a good site. Thanks for posting it.

Humpy is another good suggestion, for the Gallatin & Madison rivers. It does a great imitiation of the white pine moth. (I think that’s what it’s called) My time their last summer, every evening this was a huge hatch and the trout were gulping the entire way along the river.

Paul

Thanks for all of the great info guys.
I have checked out Parks fly shop…actually been there several times. Must of got a kid working in the shop now to build him a website…LOL Sersiously…well put together
site and a lof of good information.

Joe,

I fished with a guide up in the NE end of the park once. I normally fish dries and told him so but, early in the morning with no hatches going or hoppers moving, he wanted me to go with nymphs, actually an IPW (which is something that doesn’t show up in their catalog) and PT trailer. Like I said, I normally fish on top, but those flies caught a lot of fish, and he showed me another way to find them in the off hours - really paid off when I went back up there with friends in October after the hatches and terrestrials were done and streamers weren’t making it happen.

Regards,
Scott

Thanks Scott,

The IPW’s you were using I assume would be just plain Pink?

Ok…I’m having a real brain f a r t … what’s an IPW?
