Montana could use a little precipitation

Add a little for southern Wyoming…

Wyo-blizzard

Here in Arizona we’d like to send some up to y’all! We’ve already had about 75% of our avg. annual rainfall and the fishing is lousy in the streams and lakes right now.

Even the tourists are starting to complain about the weather here.

Snow on the roof with fire in the hearth

Saw an article from BC that said the record sunshine this winter has meant the managers are getting antsy as run off will be down and salmon streams might be affected.

Also the drought index is at a record level so forest fires are a concern.

It is so dry here already that if we don’t have huge rains in the next couple of months I’m afraid that we will have the worst fires in years.A lot of my friends and family work in the woods and they are already afraid to build a fire it is so dry in the lowlands. we were doing fine with our snow level here until the pineapple express hit us a few weeks ago.It took off close to a foot of snow in about three days and we hit almost 70 degrees in the end of January. If I get a chance I will shoot a picture in a bit of the Rockies to the north into B.C.the Canadian side is holding more snow than the U.S. side so you really can see the difference in the snow load now.

I had to go out today and there were Girls wearing shorts out and people were riding the motor bikes. It was in the 60’s here today sunny no clouds or wind. Beautiful day for sure. Supposed to be the same for the next week they are saying. I also went down to the river just to take a look and there were fish feeding on dry flies. A friend that owns a local fly shop told me today that he saw a caddis fly today. (About two months early) I would guess the snow line at about 8,000 feet right here were I live.
If we don’t get a lot of rain this spring or summer you can bet there are going to be a lot of river closings. Just be prepared for it if you are headed this way. The FFF get togeather may be a real dry one.

We here in SE. Idaho are real short too. and it has been going on for a few years in a row. It better be a wet spring or the fish here will need to grow feet

My wife and I saw a Humming Bird here in Alberton today…this can’t be good. Scott

Here is what the Missouri River looked like this morning. Note the lack of snow. Also, you don’t see them in the picture, but the ground squirrels are out.

Gophers have been out here in town off and on all winter long. Real unusual to see that for sure. Ron

Scott, I see you live in Alberton and I wonder if we have met? I was one of the other three hundred residents for the last two years, but I live in missoula now. Anyway, I was over on the Locsha and Clearwater over the weekend and I have to wonder if the Locsha will even get high enough to whitewater raft this year. There is hardly any snow on Lolo pass. This summer is going to be bad. I’ve seen some numeras and capnias out on the river but no skwallas yet, though I heard that they were out a week ago when it was really warm. We could still get some snow so we’ll just have to wait to see how bad it is. Don’t forget that last year we went into summer with everyone thinking fires and we got all that rain and only had a few very small fires so it might not be so bad.

Benjo – Let’s hope for those spring showers. I pretty much follow climate predictions all year long and one difference from last year was they were predicting some moisture for last spring. This year they are still showing normal or below normal precip.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best!

Here in Pennsylvania we’ve had too much rain/snow the last two years. We came out from under a 3-5 year drought in a hurry. Droughts are tough and the one you folks are going through is a 10 year drought I think. I pray for precip for you. Wish I could ship you some of ours.

Having watched a fire start in the Beartooths summer before last, I appreciate your situation. In Ky, we have just had the second wettest year ever and are currently working on a wetter year yet. We have been having some form of precipitation 50% of the time.

Yeah, it is a sad sight all throughout Montana and North Dakota. The Missouri watershed is really hurting, and it doesn’t help matters in the world of fishing on the big reservoirs like Ft. Peck, Sakakawea and Oahe when the Corps of Engineers is flushing all the water down south to serve a floundering eco-disaster of a barge industry in Missouri and points south.

They fear that natural walleye reproduction on Sakakawea will cease this year when the water falls to new record lows…and to think in 1991 the lake was at an all time high!

Hi Group,

SW Idaho is in tough shape as well. Gretchen and I fished the SF of the Boise this weekend and one of our group saw a salmonfly. They don’t usually show up until much later in the year. It’s been aweful dry and much warmer than normal. Pray for rain/snow. Take care & …

The southern rockies are doing very, very well this year. Check out the snotel data at:

Low to mid-50’s predicted for Billings this week… <sigh>
