I have come across several spools of Orvis 10/0 black monofilament thread. They don’s stock it anymore.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this particular material? Who made it? Why discontinued?
hey ray,
according to what i have read, thread is classified as either aught as what you posted, ten/aught, or denier. in this case, 10/0 would probably compare to about 60 denier. in comparison, kevlar is 200 denier, 6/0 is 135 denier which is what i mostly use on my poppers. mono, floro, and stranded each have their own story. hope this helps.
Don’t know anything about it, Ray, but I have a spool I’m not using - will send it if you like.
I use mono for a lot of my saltwater tying; when I was at the local craft store a few months ago, I found that, in addition to the clear thread (for a lot less $$ than a spool of Danville’s), they had it in dark grey and black.
Regards,
Scott
Still have about 3 feet on an old spool of Coates & Clark monofilamanet thread in smoke. Used up all but a foot of the clear years ago & if there was any black it all went into the hellgrammite & black sculpin flys. They used to retail other colors at Singer Sewing Center Stores, but not much of a practical application. UTC (USA) markets mono in different sizes & colors for fly tying as does UNI (Canada) & probably other companies. Of the dozen old spools of Orvis thread, none have a country of manufacture.
I just bought 2 spools of Coats transparent thread in size .04. one spool of dark or smoke, and one spool of clear. 400 yards for $2.59 a spool. Purchased these from hobby lobby. they are the smaller spools so they fit in my standard bobbins, walmart has the large spools but they are kind of a PITA in my opinion…
I’m sorry guys that I may not have asked my question properly. I also have at least a dozen spools of various monofilament threads.
I was particurly interested in identifying the manufacturer of the Orvis thread. This thread is not listed any more.
Good for furled leaders…
Call Orvis and ask. When I see mono thread for sale these days it usually comes in a thickness, like .004, .006, .008. This is a link to the Waspi catalog that has mono spooled material: http://www.wapsifly.com/pdffiles/wap/page%2054.pdf
