Today was the first time I tried the 6’ mono furled leaders that I bought on eBay.
I attached 4’ of 5x of fluorcarbon but the leader didn’t turn over nearly as well as the 5’ uni thread ones.
The leader which was rated for 3-5 weight rods, was attached to a 4WF SA line.
It really required the rod to be loaded before the leader would lay out straight.
The uni thread leaders turned over with very little effort.
I was wondering if there is a real difference between the uni thread and mono furled leaders as far as casting is concerned or is it just me.
Dude, pm me an address and I will send you a 5’ or a 5 1/2’ or a 6’ (your choice) "UNI MONO 4m. Like to hear your feelings on it. Mine is a 4 to 6 weight class
I was also going to say, yes the mono are a little stiffer. The tapers I use are pretty good though.
I like the MONO in the colder months as thread leaders were sticking to the rocks…so, I started using the UNI MONO. Fell in love with it. Not as stiff as MONO
Very interesting!!!
What mono was used may be the answer.
I make my 7’ Mono leaders from 4# test Berkley Extra Limp line and they turn over better that the 7’ Uni ones?
I give each of my leaders a couple of test casts before packaging them.
It may also be the formula.
Jack, how many wraps are you using in the BUTT section. MAN! 4 lb makes some HUGE leaders, but I am doing 7 wraps so 14 total.
Jack, you interested in a Furled Leader swap? For that fact, is any one else interested in a swap?
I’d sign up for a swap…
what in the world is ‘uni mono’? lol
p.s. - if we do a swap may I suggest that recipe’s / materials be included with the leader?
oh - I went searching for your ‘ultra limp’ line lol… was not having ANY luck finding it, and then I was I was looking on Cabela’s website I found it as a description of the following product (can you verify if this is correct I’d like to try it I need to order some more leader anyway)
Berkley Trilene XL? Smooth Casting Line
Super strong, extra-limp Berkely Trilene XL? comes off the spool smooth and straight for long, accurate, controllable casts and natural lure presentation. Available in Low-Visibility Clear, Ultra-Low-Visibility Green, and High-Visibility Fluoroscent Clear/Blue and in 330, 1,000 and 3,000-yard spools.
Fair enough. Uni Mono is put out by UNI…LOL in 4m and 7m
so what pound test does the 4m or 7m equate to? how many leaders do you get out of a spool?
I use the 4m for the 4 to 6 weight and the 7 for 7 thru 9 weight.
Joni;
I’m using 6 & 6 for a total of 12 in the butt section. Yes a furled leader swap would be great. It’s been about 3 years since the last one and I’m sure we’ve found lots of materials and tricks since then.
I make the start and end loops approx 1/2 the distance between pegs 1 & 2 for a 12/10/8/6 taper.
Cool, I can’t wait to try one of your leaders. I am going to start a new POST for this swap, so jump in again if you would, guys.
From my experience( which isn’t much ) it’s probably the formula. I’ve just made up a few 5’s out of Cortland 2# Camo line & they look pretty good & Turn over pretty well, The only problem I’ve noticed is that they stretch, I had a good fish on & he spit the hook & the leader twisted up something awful as it bungeed back. I had a heck of a time untangling the leader, tippet, flies, & indicator. I’m wondering if the best solution is to put 1 strand of spider wire in the furl.
Same pattern here as well, I use 6/0, 8/0 Uni, Danville Mono, 6# Trilene Vanish, 4# mono and .015 sewing thread nylon and Braid(do not care for braid, by request only) .
And you don’t find the 4 lb. HUGE compared to the Uni? I guess the slimness of mine is what makes them attractive to other ff.
I do a different taper however, but even the 6’ are easy as heck to cast by hand.
The 4 lb. I furl is a bit thick but the fishers here use them for bass bugs and larger deer hair flies. The 6 lb. Vanish is used here for Pike, Muskie and heavy bass slop fishing.
Here is a copy of the little description sheet that I have sent out to the fly shops that carry my leaders.
Trouter excellent dryfly, fish wet as is or apply floatant and it is a floater (I use Red Mucilin myself) Breaking Point 7.5 pounds, 6/0 Uni
Finesse excellent dryfly, fish wet as is or apply floatant and it is a floater (I use Red Mucilin myself) A bit tougher then Trouter but not as soft.
Breaking Point 10.5 pounds, .004 Nylon
Basser excellent for weed and heavy cover, fish wet
Breaking Point 18 pounds, 4 pound Mono
Game Fisher excellent for toothy critter, fish wet for Musky, Pike, Walleye and large fish like Carp. A good Saltwater leader as well, sinks great.
Breaking Point 45 plus pounds, 6 pound Fluorocarbon
I get that. For me, it is more wraps and on occasion, a secret ingredient.
