Missoula 10/2-10/8

Pulled away from work to squeeze in some flyfishing. Will be in Missoula tomorrow through 10/8 and looking for suggestions on where to fish solo. Am a fair fly caster and in pretty good shape. At 57 though, my days of boulder hopping and chest deep wading are behind me. Considering walk/wade and/or float the Blackfoot, Clark’s Fork, Rock Creek and even a venture to the Kootenai or Lochsa in Idaho. Prefer dries, but will nymph and chuck streamers (enjoy soft hackles particularly). Happy to discuss over a pale ale (my treat) and maybe talk sharing a float. Grateful for replies.

Try Georgetown lake. Seventy five miles east of Missoula. Beautiful area and big fish. Can wade from shore and throw a fly.

Hackler, You can check at local fly shops in Missoula for information. You might PM johnscott on this site and ask if he’s up for a fish. He lives in the Missoula area and knows it well. I think there may be a few more FAOLers in that area if you can’t find John.
You missed the Idaho fish-in by a few days. Jack Hise might still be in that area too. Jim

Don’t know if Rock Creek fishes well this time of year, but everyone should fish it once in their life. If you’re up for a drive, go to Phillipsburg and hit the upper end of Rock cr. Don’t try to drive up from the bottom, unless you like narrow rough roads.

It does

If you have a rental car, make sure your insurance covers your oil pan.

Check out Kingfisher Flyshop; good online reports and a nice shop to visit. Enjoy your trip

Curious myself: Are there a lot of places to wade fly fish? Also, is there smaller stream fly fishing near Missoula?

Randy

Yes, to both.
