Missing furled leader makers

Hi, Fry Flier - I’ve e-mailed you

Bill! Great to hear from you. We saw Al at the Bean’s Expo this weekend  Sounds like you’re using the technique Claude Freaner uses… you must have some open space there in Texas to fit the extra length - grin . Thanks for the dot. Hope all is well.

Have your dots, Parnelli and Mike, thanks

Kat

Thanks Kathy you now have addy.

Ive been making them for some time in Oregon for use on our spring creeks.

A question for all of you leader tiers out there.
When you get down to the end of a spool of thread do you tie leftovers together to get enough for another leader or do you just scrap it?

Hi,

I’m not so hot on knots, so I don’t splice my thread ends to another leader. Instead, if there is enough left, I take the almost spent spools in to school for the kids whoi tie. Ususally, there’s very little left, though.

Kat

Kathy, Well I tried it last night to see what would happen. I had 3 spools with a bit of thread left on each. I tied them together with a double surgens knot and gave it a try.
A 3 color leader seem to be just as strong as a single thread one would be. The knots didn’t show hardly at all.
I will let you know how it works. I am going to be useing it very soon.

Good luck. I’ll be interested.

Looks like even Shawmut is wadeable already on the Kennebec. Strange year.

The map has been fun, but Nevada remains un-dotted.

Just as an aside, too, there are furlers in a few other places penned in the margins: Germany, Australia, Italy, Romania, Ireland, Serbia, The Netherlands, England, Denmark, Finland, and the provinces of Nova Scotia, Ontario (lots), Alberta, and Quebec. I’m sure there are more I haven’t run across.

The only bulk thread I’ve ordered was some glowing stuff that didn’t work out through my local fly shop since it wasn’t available around here in any quantity. A good experiment but turned out rather expensive for the lesson learned. I buy the 200 ft Uni, and find that especially in summer, I don’t want waxed thread simmering on the shelves. Just me.

Kat

Wait! Maybe I didn’t answer that… yes to both Hawaii and Alaska; furlers both places.

Not Puerto Rico, not Guam, as far as I know - grin.

Kathy, I posted a few days ago asking if any other leader makers used leftover spools of thread to make a leader. I told you that I did and would let you know what I found out.
It works great or at least this one did.
I used 3 part spools tied them together and spun out a leader.

I used this leader for the whole day and I fished very hard with it. I was hung up in the trees a few times on bottom and you know the rest. I gave it a good reefing.
Oh I did manage to catch a nice 14" brown.
Not to many fish to be had but did have a good day on the water.
So I wanted to let you know that odds and ends of thread will work.
Hope you have good fishing this spring.

Well you can add Ontario Canada to the map, rec’d. my DVD this morning and blew the first one all the way to the other end of the province. You have made it so plain and simple Kathy that I know I will be experimenting and making my own from here on. Oh yes that was the first one now #2 & #3 are as you put it “Hanging from the rafters.” I need to pick up a knit picker but everything else was here at home.

Oh the pain, I do not think I can work today. Hurry grab the rods and let’s go.

Hi,

Maineguide - neat! I’m not a bit jealous that you were out fishing  Your use of the ends of the spool reminds me of the Maine (?) saying, “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” Good advice from the past.

FF - There’s nothing like a good leader “explosion”! Glad it’s working out for you.

Kathy,is there a forum just on making furled leaders?
