Went out fishing over lunch and (music please) caught fish on a fly I tied. Yea me. Caught a bluegill, about 7 in,unhooked him, snapped a quick pic with the cell phone, Tossed the fly in the water while I rinsed my hands and, yup you guessed it a second one took off with my fly. And he still has it. Rats, I wanted to keep that fly.
The breakthrough came as I was walking back to the car. Looked over to my right and saw the settling ponds. “Doh” (Slapping sound of hand hitting head) “Bonehead” (Slapping sound of other hand hitting head). The lake I fish is an old gravel pit turned city park. Not a lot of places where the shore and the walking trail allow for a backcast. But the ponds are wide open. How many times does Rick Z mention settling ponds in his articles and I just today open my eyes to them? Yea, I’m slow but I do learn.

Hey Swen,
congrats on the fish. I just recently got a camera phone and I use it as well to take picture of fish. This is a great invention for us flyfishers. Was this your first fish on afly you tied? If so super congrats. That was one of the greatest things in the world when I got my first fish on a fly I made.
Talk to ya later
Sarge.
Congrats again, Swen. I remember what it felt like to get the first fish on a fly I tied. The feeling can be good enough to keep ya dancing for a week.

The only limitations we have are the ones we put on ourselves.
Good Job Swen! Its a wonderful thing when we truely open our eyes and see the whole scene before us. Catching them on your one flys is a bonus, it realy adds to the enjoyment.
