Here is just one of the sandwiches served at the Cattywampus Restaurant located in Lynchburg, Tennessee"
"The Spammy-Wampus which is:
“Our take on a southern classic, the adventurous SPAM sandwich! Served on grilled toast with sauteed sweet onions and bell peppers and topped with a grilled pineapple ring. You gotta try this! y’all!”
Actually if you lose the grilled pineapple, this sounds like a great sammich. On second thought, I’d even try it with the pineapple. I’m sure SPAM would carry this sammich with or without. Cattywampus Restaurant is now on my roadfood “must try” list but we won’t be in that area till December. My TN list now contains the Loveless Cafe in near Nashville, Dotsons in Franklin and now the Cattywampus in Lynchburg.
The waitress stated that this sandwich is not made with the “out of the can” SPAM, but, the SPAM is creamed like a sandwich spread. They also have:
Southern Fried Cheese, Homestyle Salmon Cakes, Zula’s Fried Green Tomatoes, Fried Dill Pickles, Tennessee Onion Straws, Fried Chicken, Roasted Chicken, Fried Catfish, Pan-Seared Catfish, Homestyle Salmon Cakes, 10 oz Ribeye, 8 oz Sirloin, 10 oz Pork Chop, Uncle Jack’s Grilled Salmon and Cobb Hollow Chicken.
For Dessert: Miss Denise’s Apple Dumplin, Bert’s Bread Puddin, Sister Nancy’s Peach Cobbler, Mulberry Mud Chocolate Cake, Big Mama’s Banana Puddin’ served in a good ol’ canning jar and Cousin Cathy’s Carrot Cake
Let me know when you will be here and maybe I can set up a fishing trip for us to take plus I would love to meet another FAOL member that I only know by name.
Call me crazy, but other than those fried dill pickles (please, lord, let me never see those words strung together that way again) I’d try anything else on the menu instead of that creamed spam sandwich. This is way way worse than the 7th grade cooking class chipped beef on toast I forced down. I need a good strong cup of joe and a bagel to get over this thread.
I would eat anything served at that place. I am planning on building the spam sandwiches at home but grilling the bread and spam right along side the pineapple.
Warren,
Until you mentioned “the SPAM is creamed” I was all sparklers and enthusiasm about this sammich. Creamed as in “chipped with cream” or creamed as in a blender and then formed patty style and grilled? The former…??. The latter sounds ,at least, tolerable but I’d have to see one before I’d commit. I ws curious enough to call them at 6:20 CST but they were closed or too busy to answer. In any case, thanks for bringing this to my attention . Their menu sounds “tasty” and we’re always on the lookout for good places to eat on our drive to Florida in December.
Thanks also for the invitation to wet a fly.
Mark;
Should you plan to visit and partake of the current menu as well as our tailwater fishing I invite you and yours to share my “Woodland Room” for as many nights as you wish (3 being the max). We will visit the Bell Buckle Cafe for another sampling of some fine Southern Cooking!
BOY OH BOY!!! …Get rid of the Spam & those onion straws & I’m in Mikey’s health food HEAVEN!!! Oh, do I love the words “fried”, “grilled”, & “dessert”…I just don’t see any smoked brisket, pulled pork, or fried turkey…What’s up with that? Oh yeah, BEER!..is it a beer joint?
Mikey
I don’t know about that but I’m bettin’ that, given my diet, I’ll never bleed to death!
What’s really comical is my Doctor. He can’t understand why I’m so darned healthy (with low BP, low cholesterol) with the stuff I eat! I keep telling him it’s because I SELDOM (almost never) take medication, & I really believe that.

Mikey,
I have told people for years the most important thing you can do is get born in the right family. Apparently you did, and I did also to a certain extent. I do have HBP, take cholesterol meds, and have high triglycerides, but that said my Mom’s dad lived to be almost 91, he thought if you didn’t have a ham in the house you were on the verge of starvation. Of course in his mid 80’s at 4 p.m. he would be in his No. Mississippi garden with a push plow in July. But I do try to get in about ? hour of walking or biking every weekday and aerobic fishing on the weekend.
Remember how much simpler it was when Spam only came in a can.
I have a brother-n-law that was born and raised in Ga. Augusta, I believe, moved to Ohio against his better judgment, God Bless him, and has longevity in his family, mine not so much, I have teased him about the food in the south, lets face it, you do eat good in the south, fried as it may be, but for the love of God you fry your vitamins. You don’t have to admit to that but you do fry your vegetables.
The thing I don’t get is when I accidentally knocked a glass of sweet tea off my table at the Cracker Barrel, how the tea kept its shape 3 seconds after the glass had broken away. I’m just saying.
Jesse,
What’s really laughable is that the ONLY 2 people (in my memory) who are blessed with great health in my family are my youngest brother, Terry, & I…and we live the most UNhealthy lifestyles!!! Go figure.
