made a few midge nymphs today in size 16. I used this green midge tubing I had sitting around. it didn’t fit over the hook so I tied it in and wrapped it. also had a strand of chartruese crystal flash tied in on the back which I used to wrap over the tubing for sparkle. topped it off with the peacock herl. what ya think? 1st one I ever tried to make. I made a couple to try out as a dropper pattern off a foam bug or dry this spring and summer
Looks good. I used a silver tinsel under the body and really liked the outcome of it as well.
Looks good.
I often use a size 18 midge as a dropper behind a foam bug.
I often use thread for the body with ribbing of very fine copper wire. Then I coat the body with nail polish. A head of 1 to 2 wraps of herl works great for me.
There have been days when I would have been skunked except for the midge dropper!

thanks for the ideas. I will use less peacock next time. I would of used size 18 or smaller like they recomended in the book but the smallest size I got was 16. there isn’t much trout around my rivers except steelhead in the fall, winter, and spring. this will be used for summer fish like gills and creek chubs and bass or whatever else feels like biting lol. I think a steelhead would straighten this hook out. I could be mistaken tho. now that I know this tubing works good maybe I will get a few more colors. any you recomend? red or or something?
Some other colors, Red for Chironomids, Black, Chartruese…brown…any color you want practically.
Have you tied any zebra midges yet?? That is a great pattern.
Nice tie BTW!
Don’t forget that peacock is one of the best miracle fish catchers!
ok guys I will try a zebra midge next time! I see different ones tho. silver and copper. whats better? I have copper beadheads and copper wire maybe I will try that. also seen one that was white and black thread that wasn’t a nymph with poly spinner wings.
Fishaholic,
Any color combo you like is worth a try!!
I personally like Black body with white ribbing, Red with black ribbing, Black with Chartruese ribbing…and so on.
Really, any color you feel like trying is worth it!!
Good Luck!
ok I will make a few tomorrow. just tied my 1st bunny leech. didn’t post it tho. its not bad looking at all. was my 1st time working with rabbit strips… thats a simple fly if I ever seen one.
Post a picture of that Leech!!
haha ok I will go get it! here is the bunny leech. only thing wrong is the front. you can see it smashed down. used black regular zonker for tail and crosscut for body with pearl krystal flash.
Very Nice!!!
Coneheads have always been a pain in the @$$ for me. I always end up messing up the front of the fly. My solution? Just use beads instead, Cones aren’t worth the trouble I have with them.
But if you can get them to work for you, More power to you!!
Good luck!
I got bead and cone both. I will try a bead next time and see if its better. I was thinking maybe just building the thread up to the cone to keep the shape? could be a waste of thread but a better look for us or maybe fish don’t care if its got a messed up head and whats the point. lol. will have to try this one and see.
Fish don’t care, it’s just to please ourselves. lol
You can put some wraps of lead wire on the shank of the hook, Then push them up into the cone to keep it from spinning and also to help with the gap when finishing the fly.
