Just want to tell everrybody about a GREAT flybox!
I recieved one of Danbob’s Midge boxes to “Field Test” and all I can say is it is GREAT,
I really like the magnet’s in, it simple idea, I’m simple why didn’t I think of it.
It is really easy to get them “Little Suckers” out and putting them back is just as easy.
Dan sent it out as a “Freebie” to try, Well I’m putting a check in the mail today to pay for this one and another one for Jean.
Here’s the link for them.
thats different.
but it appears that one would have to dig through the flies on top to reach the flies that are on the bottom. i would like to see a box that is completely full of flies (not just 1 magnet with a dozen or so hooks) to verify my query.
when you open a c&f box the flies are right there in front of you in neat little rows, ready to be picked out. i know what i have. if these magnets are super strong then having a vertical stack of flies will make it hard to get to the first ones stuck to the magnet without moving or dislodging some flies.
maybe its just the skeptic in me.
I have one of Danbob’s midge box’es also. Each magnet has 6 flies on them. None are on top of each other. And none of them get dislodged unless I decide to pluck them out. I find it to be a great box. I know 12 dozen flies in a box does not sound like a lot but it is more than I need for most outings. John
You don’t have to worry about the hooks being in a tangled mess around the magnet. Danbob’s creation not only will hold the flies securly in a small gale, it holds them seperate and apart. It was one of the first things I noticed about the box when I got one from Dan.
The magnets hold the hooks in a rough circle and they are quite easy to pick out. The magnet seems to sort them out this way without any help from the fisherman.
Of course you don’t pile 100 hooks in each compartment either.
I just got out my the littlesouthfork flybox to check how many flies I actually had in it and counted 110 midges most around #18 - #14. Plenty for a days fishing.
The one Dan sells is roughly the size of an altoids box with 9 small compartments on one side and 6 larger compartments on the other.
For midges in the wind, I have not seen anything nearly as good as this particular midge box.
I keep midges on one side and Chironomids on the other. I really like how easy it is to get the size 20 and smaller ones out.
Happily Dan now has them available on his website so I can buy them online.
( Instead of bumming free ones off him  )
He only has the midge boxes for sale now, but I hope in the future He will consider makeing some for larger flies as the concept is simple but very good.
I finally got my photobucket to work. here is a pic of the midge box, note how the flies cluster around each magnet seperating themselves nicely. Makes it easy to pick one out.
Sorry to be a stick in the mud but the best midge box I have found that holds a ton of midges is a pillbox from your local pharmacy. get the kind that hold a 7 day supply of pills–they will hold whatever you tie or buy and you can separate by color, size, pattern or whatever you fancy. Better yet they are not costly–a pair of tweezers (from the cosmetic section at the same pharmacy) is a way to select which you will use. And if you get the “round” configuration instead of the straight you can keep a number of boxes in your vest pocket for minimal space
