The only possibility for any trout fishing in my part of the world right now is in the warm water winter stocking rivers. All of our tailwaters will wash a wader down stream in a heartbeat.
So, I hit the Stones River today to get a little action of the fresh stocked rainbows. Had a great time. All of the fish I caught (and released) were 10 1/2" to 12" and of good quality. They came fresh from the Flintville, TN Hatchery early this morning.
I had my rod already rigged with a chartruese wooly bugger and a brown soft hackle from my last trip down to the Elk, so that’s what I used. It amazes me that these fish have probably only eaten pellets all of their life, but through instinct or something, went after my flies with gusto.
It was great to get out after two weeks of no fishing.
That’s what’s happening in my neck of the woods.

Hey Wm1: that’s where I caught my first Tennessee trout almost two years ago. They’ll probably stock Niece Mill too. I’ll have to go.:lol:

It just so happens that I fished Nice Mill today. Had another great day. Trout were smaller and no crowd. Used the same wooly bugger and small soft hackle.

It is wadable 3.3’ everywhere except right below the dam out to the first island. Below that it is OK. And, the trout are spread out nicely down stream.
It was stocked last Friday, Dec. 11.

Ron, by the way, yesterday I fished the Stones River in Murfreesboro, not below JPP dam.
I know that you didn’t catch your first trout there because this is the first time that they have stocked it.

Last night’s fly shop chatter has it that no fish are being seen in the Caney below Betty’s Island. No brookies have been seen lately. 30# stripers have been reported caught in the vicinity by the hardware guys. Don’t know if it is true or a fish story, but that was the chatter.

That is not good news.
I have been wanting to get down to Betty’s Island whenever it is wadable again. Last time down there I lost a “big” brown. Of course that was several weeks, or was it months, ago.
Keep me posted on the fly shop chatter.
Meanwhile, I will fish the wadable rivers.
I see that they are not generating on the Elk today (surprised me), and they are backing off on the Duck at Normandy.
