Michigan Fish-In Self Help(sort of) Fly Tying Clinic

On Monday evening 2 July in the Board room at Gates we will be having the First (and maybe last) FAOL Fly Tying Clinic. I will be showing different type of Parachutes and using Al Beatty’s tie off method. I am by NO MEANS an “eggspert”!
Now for the "HARD Part we need some other Volunteer “Show and Tellers” otherwise this is going to be a very short session, and we will de-generate into nothing but a “BS” session and we really don’t want that to happen now do we?
So give a holler, personally I would like to learn how to “spin” deer hair.
HOW ABOUT IT!
Bill

WOW! What great idea! Lets get several guys in this.

Maybe another night too…

I will be bringing my travel tying kit, and will be tying a few “Michigan” patterns like the Robert’s Drake (this week’s Fly of the Week) and the Zoo Cougar. With hatches coming off early and late in the day (not to mention at midnight as well for the Hex), perhaps a mid-afternoon tying session would be appropriate. I’m getting in on Sunday afternoon, so let me know what works. I’m bringing my canoe and plan on making a few float trips during the week, but certainly NOT on July 4th. Way too much boat traffic on that day.

Here’s a picture I posted some time ago of a gift box of Michigan flies I tied for a Christmas fly exchange at my local club.

Here’s the Pearl Drake:

and finally, a Pearl X-Caddis that works day and night:

Sounds good to me also. I think afternoons will be good. I am always up for a little help in the tying department.

I will have the furled leadre board also…we can spin up a few if anyone is interested.

Brad

Brad,

Maybe we can swap some of my flies for a furled leader for my 7’0" 1wt??? Something soft and sweet to lay down a size 20 dry?? I love to barter

Joe

Bill,

I’d be happy to tie a few of the old Michigan patterns, if you have some room.

I am sure we can work something out…I enjoy decorating the trees along the river…I will need a few flies for that project

Sounds Great to me will look forward to it.

Speaking of tying and flies. :? I’m crossing the border and to date have not tested the waters with customs regarding tying materials or flies for that matter. Let’s say it’s been easy to skirt the issue until now. Has anyone any personal experiences to share or suggestions. JC / Ladyfisher?? I don’t want to get held up nor loose my fly boxes if they decide to go have a look at my gear. I cross the border several times a year but usually just to see my mother and any fly gear, I try not to get into that sort of detail with the officers, but there are usually assorted fly boxes in with some of my stuff.

Mato,

Unless you’re carrying REAL exotic stuff, it shouldn’t be any problem at all. I go over from Michigan once a week on business and always have tying stuff with me. Never had a problem. When they ask, I explain what I have and it’s not be an issue . . .

Joe

It will be an honor to tie alongside one of the great Michigan Masters. I didn’t realize you would be at the Fish In. Looking forward to seeing you. Any other “sleepers” from MFFC or the GLC going to be with you? The Ohio Expo will be January 5, 2008 at the same venue as this year. Whole new team putting it on now that i’m “Chairman Emeritus.” That sure has a nice ring to it after 5 years. I finally get to tie all day instead of working.

Joe V

Joe,

I was planning to rally the troops and see if we can’t get a few of the “sleepers” to show. . . A few of them lurk around here and I was going to pass the word and see if we can get some to attend. This is home water for many and we might even be able to get a few to share some “secret spots” with the FAOL gang.

Joe

I have crossed the border 3 times so far this year from BC to Washington State. I have had my boat in the back of the truck and each time and was asked why i was coming to Washington. I told them I was going flyfishing in their state . None of the officers asked or seemed to care that I was bringing feathers into the country. They just wished me luck.

One did ask me to explain what the Central Washington Fish In was and I explained that it was a fishing trip where we tied flies ,fished and swaped lies . I got no hassle from him at all.

Gnu,
What is this “Swap Lies” thing? Fly Fishers Never fabriciate on their fishing.
I am Shocked.
Oh Yeah did I tell you about the 2foot Bluegill I caught in the rain puddle the other day?
Bill

Bill,
You must have been in Ohio…that is one of the prime habitats for the mighty salt water bluegill, a species ONLY available here in the Buckeye State.
Mike

I fish for storm sewer crappy myself. It’s really tough getting the big ones through the iron grate though.

JOE I HOPE TO BE THERE THIS YEAR , SHOULD BE ALOT OF FUN I WILL KNOW IF I CAN IN A WEEK OR SO HOPE TO SEE EVERONE .
RON
( ONEFLY)

Joe, this MFFC member will be there again this year… by way of NC of course!
Looking WAY forward to seeing everyone again!

Jack,

It’ll be good to see you again . . . it’s been a while.

Joe
