I enjoy messing around with new non-traditional fly tying materials when I find them. I tied these un on size 10 jig hooks with a bead head so that they would ride hook point up. I will be using them for Bluegill this fall and winter. The material is a metallic string I found in a craft store for 99 cents. Just a bit of rabbit fur for the tails, the metallic string wrapped for the body and a coat of UV epoxy to protect the string and make them almost bullet-proof. I used red thread to simulate gills. Super easy to tie, not heavy at all and they should produce well. I thought I share just to give folks some ideas about using non-traditional materials at the vise.
Nice ties Jim. I am now in Downeast Maine, even further north than Dublin, NH!
I have some interesting things to try also, once I dredge them out from what ever box they are in!

Those look great. Should be good through the ice, too.
Thanks Mike. It appears that you are moving in the wrong direction for your retirement, unless of course you’re preparing for global warming;) I hope everything is going well for you and yours and that you’re enjoying a nice Maine summer, both weeks of it.
Take care and have a wonderful fall.
Jim
Just what I need. Another material to buy.

Rick Z, Your comment made me chuckle. I have more fly tying materials than I could ever use in my life time and I still look for new/different stuff. Last year, I gave away about 30 pounds of tying materials to different non-profit fly tying/fishing related organizations, and I honestly can’t see that I have any less stuff. Heaven help my kids when I check out. It’s either going to be a great opportuity for some fly tyers, or a dumpster full of good stuff.
Nice ties and thanks for sharing!
