We Drove across the boarder into Oregon to flyfish a Blue Ribbon Trout stream the Metolius. Its a spring creek and I’ve been wanting to fish it for a few years and this was the best opportunity we’ve had. Rented a cabin ahead of time (slow season rates) and had the whole week to fish and catch some monster trouts.
well…i kinda got skunked!
it was good weather we hiked the trails and enjoyed the scenery. There was very little insect activity and i only saw one fish rise to a pale mayfly. Sometimes i wonder why i have to be a dry fly fisherman?
We packed up early and headed for home. cranked up the tunes and set the cruise its about 6 1/2 hour drive with 3 turns
_7x,
As I recall, the Metolius is not stocked anymore, it is gin clear, so the resident trout can see you getting out of your car. It all adds up to a sight seeing trip, unless you go after the Bull Trout (In Spring?)
Search Google Images for Metolius Bull Trout.

Everything I have heard or read pretty much states that that is a really tough river to fish, especially with dries and even more so this time of year.
On a side note I remember hearing that someone designed a fly to look like popcorn a while back because the fishies were used to people feeding them popcorn up by Camp Sherman.
I think the Raccoons gave up trying to catch fish in the Metolius long ago and they wouldn’t be there unless it was for the dumpster food, in Camp Sherman. (Boise St. 61 Fresno St 10 4:35 4th qtr.)
Tyro, Welcome to the BB!

some friends said i could use their pure bred Idaho fish pointers next time i go fishing.
I thought the Boise State Blue Thunder Marching band at the half was awesome btw.
i have found the fishing to be very hard. i have had one good day and that was early in the fall. i snuck up on a monster red side rising and took him on a large salmon fly went down the bank a little ways and took another one doing the same thing. after that i went back to the same spot i hooked the first one and got a small rainbow. i was bringing in the little guy and a huge bull trout came out from under some underbrush and took a swipe at him. all the hook ups were very fast within a half hour. it was right at dusk and up by the hatchery. if the fishing stinks you can drive up the road about an hour to the crooked and fish it. on that trip i had also stoped on the north fork santiam. they were letting out water of detroit lake and i caught about two dozen stocked rainbows. it was a pretty sweet trip.
john, i use a cheap software program that came with a point and shoot camera. the software has an effects key that offers Sepia tone and i used it on these photos.
As for the Metolius, i seem like a moron there but i did do some research before the trip. The problem is everything you will ever read about spring creek fly fishing is spring creeks are very difficult to fish so, as i read up on the Met i didnt read to much into those warnings and i felt confident i could manage a few fish. We had a great time and enjoyed every minute of the trip. and we’ll go back and fish the crooked thanks for the tip and what a beautiful river that is.
