I purchased a 9’ 2 tip Montague Rapidian from eBay, and one of the tip sections needs straightened. The varnish, thread wraps/guides, etc. have been removed. The rod is bent in one direction coming out of the male ferrule. However, I have tried bending it in the opposite direction after slightly heating it up with a hair dryer as well as an alcohol lamp with undesirable results. The bend just doesn’t want to straighten out. Is this common when dealing with old mass produced rods. I have built a few graphite rods, and wanted a bambo project rod to start with. Thanks.
I’ve had bad luck trying to straighten a cane rod. I just send um to John Channer…he knows what he’s doing…I don’t.
RJD, Another trick to try is take a heating pad, place section where set bows up. Place heating pad on med on top of blank to flatten it then place a good sized book on top and let her sit for awhile. I have straightned tips this way, but sometimes they come back. Ive got an HI Cascade with a set in tip. Tried everything, still there so said nuts and fishd it that way. Looks a little funky but it casts pretty good
Usually a set straight out the ferrule cannot be corrected without working with the ferrule itself. Steam and heat bending seems to work only on sets beyond the ferrule. I warm my tips being very careful not to ruin the glue or weaken the tips ability to recoil (early on, I ruined a tip on a South Bend I was restoring by heating it too much, which caused it to become as limp as a noodle). Usually, and I learned this from a mentor and Michael Sinclair’s fine text) I gently heat the tip and straighten it, then roll it on a flat surface to make certain the set is out (this is difficult if the wraps are on). I then take a clothes pin and hang it in my shop. Hope this helps some.
